この本は、昨年、北島がバルセロナで、世界新を出すまでしか
書かれていない。その後は、まだ白紙である。
北島と、北島が金メダルを獲るために集まった５人の男たちの記録
である。決してカネのためではない。
あれからＣＭなどに出て、オリンピックは大丈夫か心配させるが、
北島なら、きっとやってくれる。
それを証明してくれる本である。

著者は、ずっと前、スポーツキャスターをしていたのを
私は覚えている。
その時のイメージままの、さっぱりとした切り口で書かれている。
文章に切れがある。
今、私が一番期待していることは、この続きが読みたい。
読めるのは、もちろん、北島がアテネで金メダルを取った時だ。

この本には北島を世界の頂点に君臨させるべく動く「チーム北島」の八年間の軌跡が、淡々と綴られている。
報酬のために動いているわけではなく、事実ほとんどが手弁当であるという。
人は他者に対して、どこまで自分をかけられるだろうか。裏方に徹するには理由がある。それは滅私奉公ではあり得ず、また、自らの過去の競技生活をだぶらせているのでもない。

科学と哲学を貫く彼らには矜持という言葉がふさわしいのではないか。この環境と人が世界の北島を育てていると言っても過言ではない。
アテネオリンピック競泳が楽しみになる本。

アテネオリンピックではこの本に書かれているように、技術的な面、精神的な面などについて最高の結果を出すことができたと思います。この結果を踏まえて将来が有望な選手をどんどんと支援するようなプロジェクトが増えることを期待します。
内容は少し専門的なので難しい面もありましたが、水泳をしている人は参考になるのではと勝手に感じました。
