著者唯一の雑文集だということである。小説を読むときに作者を意識せずに読むという人ならこの本は用は無い。私は気に入った作者の作品は徹底的に読むほうなので、このような本はものすごく参考になる。

どうして高村薫の若者は不幸な死を迎えるのか、なぜ子供が登場しないのか、家族持ちが登場しないのか、なぜ大阪のしかも湾岸地域が舞台になっているのか、なぜ教会がしばしば登場しながらキリスト教の臭いが全くしないのか、下町の工場、学術雑誌の編集作業、警察の仕事等、しばしば仕事の中身がまるで自分が体験したかのように詳しく描かれるのは何故か。（この中で作者がJRマンやブライダルエスコート、デパートマンの一日の仕事をルポした文章が載っているが、一つの作品として読み応えあり。）文庫化のたびに何故ああも大きく改稿されるのか。等、等。作品の背景が見事に浮き出たエッセイであった。

特に、家族のことを赤裸々に語ったところは必読。または仕事に対する考え方、音楽に対する感性の部分は非常に参考になった。

　著者は緻密な犯罪描写を得意とする小説家であるが、この作品は普通の生活者としての視点から子供たちのこと、社会のことなどについて書かれている。私が日常で感じていてもモヤモヤして言葉にできない感情を著者がわかり易い簡単な言葉で表現してくれる。子供の視点にたった親への意見など、割と自分の感覚に近いところが多く共感できた。

　むずかしい社会批評もいいがこのような普通の言葉の中に含蓄の在る思考が含まれている作品も貴重だ。それができるのはやはり力量のある作家だからであろう。

　著者は言わずと知れた、日本でも指折りのミステリー作家である。この本は、新聞や雑誌などに書かれたエッセイをまとめたもので、八つのテーマに分かれている。子供や教育について、戦後から現代へのご時世の変化、日本（人）の「家」について、等々。どのテーマも、著者独自の視点からきわめて淡々と、かつ深く掘り下げてある。

　中でも、今どきの子供達と彼等をとりまく大人達についての考察には、大変心を動かされた。子供をもたない著者の目から見たものだけに、鋭く的を得ているのだと思う。子供は食事を与えられるだけで安心する、毎日ご飯を作ってくれる母親が、ある日ご飯を作らなかった、子供はただそのことだけで生活の崩壊を予感する・・・・このくだりを読んでドキッとさせれられる母親は私だけだろうか。 　日本という国も、日本人も、ここ数十年で大きく変わった。そのことをただ憂うのではなく、変化の中身の何が是で何が非なのか、考えて行かなければならないと痛感した。
