本のタイトルになっている「架空の球を追う」なんて7ページしかないし、
11編すべて完成度は高く、はずれはないんだけど、その短さゆえに読んだ後の充実感は少ないです。
“もうちょっと読みたかった”という思いがどうしてもつきまといます。
だから評価の星はあえて低くして３つ。

生活のなかでのちょっとした瞬間を切り取った短編集。
その瞬間のチョイスが素晴らしくうまく、女性ならではの視点と観点で感じるものが多かったなぁ。

なかでも秀逸なのは「パパイヤと五家宝」。
高級スーパーマーケットへ非日常のファンタジーを求めにやってきた主人公。
2000円の高級マンゴーをなんの躊躇もせずにかごの中に入れる優雅マダムが目に止まり、
彼女がかごの中に入れるものとまったく同じものを自分もどんどん入れていく。
自分が本当に食べたいと思う食品を見つけて我に返ったのだけど、最後のレジの会計の時に・・・・サイコーです！

このお話に限らず、「ドバイ＠建設中」も「二人姉妹」も「架空の球を追う」もラストの落とし方がうまい。
なのに・・・もったいない。こんな短い短編じゃなく、しっかりじっくり長編で読みたかったです。

今の森さんの目線で描かれているだろう短編集。
｢銀座か、あるいは新宿か｣｢パパイヤと五家宝｣｢夏の森｣｢ドバイ＠建設中｣｢あの角を過ぎたところに｣女の本性が描かれた以上５作品が良かった。
一番、面白かったのは｢パパイヤと五家宝｣
スーパーで、他人の籠の中って気になります。
まして高級スーパーなら…。
マダムのまねをして食材を籠に入れて…
五家宝が、現実に引き戻してくれた段階で、もう大満足なのに、最後のレジのシーンは、もう最高！
短編も良いけど、この感じの中・長編を是非書いていただきたいです。

　日常生活で「イエス」か「ノー」か決着がついていても、無意識下では心の天秤が揺れていて、ちょっとした匙加減で逆転してしまう。そんな心の機微を鮮やかに描き出す。
　「パパイヤと五家宝」はこの短編集の中も秀逸で、だまし絵に隠された美女と老婆の顔のように心象風景が反転する。まるでマジックを観ているような気分でハッとさせられた。
　実は、この作品が雑誌に掲載されたのを読んで以来、私は森絵都の大ファンになった。是非一度、森ワールドをご体験下さい。
