タイトルを見てもどんな話なのか全く想像できなかったが、
読み終えた今では、タイトルを見るとなぜか安らぎを覚える。

チェスの世界がこんなにも深く静かで、またプレイヤーが
どんな人物かまで表現することもできるとは驚きでした。
チェスの魅力が存分に描かれています。
小川洋子の世界は静かで穏やかなものだけではなく不穏な出来事も起こるのだが、
すべて受入れてしまうような寛大さがある。

手の平でそっと包みこんでおきたくなるような、
愛おしいような、そんな小説です。

読み終わるのが悲しく、結末がちゃんと腑に落ち、読んでいる間も幸せな気分になれた。
きっと手元に置いて、何度も開くと思う。

私はチェスに関しては無知だけど、ちゃんと楽しめた。
もちろん、知っていればもっと楽しめるのだろう。それが残念。

チェスはやったことがないしルールは知らないし興味もないな、と思い敬遠していたのだが、まわりの評判がよいので思い切って読んでみたら、物語も文章も素晴らしすぎて文句なく魅了された。そういえば前に同じ著者の「数学」を題材にした小説でも同じような経験をしたな、と想起して、自分の学習能力のなさを反省した次第である。
本書読後も相変わらず詳しくは理解できていないチェスの対戦場面が、しかし本書の白眉だろうというのが最大の感想だ。ひとつひとつの対戦が盤上に生み出す詩や音楽や彫刻や宇宙の描写が身震いするほど巧みであり、また「盤下」と盤上の間で繰り広げられる主人公と対戦相手との友情や信頼や尊敬や愛のやりとりが、ときに優しく甘く暖かく、ときに痛く切なく心にしみてくる。
こうして様々な名勝負を棋譜に残していく主人公の、心象風景のなかに折り重なっていく人々や動物や乗り物や建物や言葉や死の記憶が、物語の後へ後へと進むほどその愛しさと哀しさを増していき、どんどんと読書の感動を高めていく。そして最後の数ページに記される博物館的な視点の文章を読み終えたとき、他の作品では得がたい独自の余韻を残して本書は幕を引く。
