頻繁にクラス会を開くF県立藤見高校旧三年二組の十年後。
女優となって大ブレイクした同級生のキョウコをいかにしてクラス会に引っ張り出すか。
五人のクラスメイトの視点で順番に語られていきます。

「反抗期もなく育った。」
と、無邪気に語る人を除けば、誰しも思い出したくない過去や、語る事の出来ないエピソードがあり、会う事が出来ない人がいるものだと思います。
この物語でも、学年の女王として生きた響子を巡り、何かのトラブルがあり、彼女や、彼女の周辺には負の思い出が残っている様子です。それが何なのか、物語が進むにつれ、その内容が徐々に明かされていきます。
傷ついたのは誰なのか。傷つけられたのは誰なのか。

傷を無かったことにするのも一つの生き方ですし、他人の傷と比較して「軽かった。」と気にしないようにするのも一つの生き方だと思いますが、この小説で語られる向き合い方は、傷を背負ってなお、前向きです。
その前向きに生きる自分と、それを理解する友人の心情がエンディングで一つになります。

最後まで読み終えて、僕は思いました。
順風満帆に生きているように見えても、または、平凡に生きていても、挫折の中にいても、こんなふうに生きていくことが出来、それを理解する人がいるのだと思えば、生きて行くことはおもしろいことですね。

辻村深月の新刊『太陽の坐る場所』。
ミステリーと帯に書かれていましたが、
読み終えてもそんなかんじは受けませんでした。

物語の語り手はほとんどが女性です。
女性が読めば少し違うのかもしれないけれど、男の私としては少し入りにくい感じがありました。

物語の序盤に登場する人物たちは、最終的には脇役という存在でしょうか。
そして終盤ではキョウコを中心とした真相が明らかになります。
読み終えたあとでは主人公は彼女かなと思いました。

そして作者は相変わらず心理描写が巧みでした。

とにかく、怖かったです。人間が！
いや、みんな考えすぎなんじゃないの、裏読みすぎと思って読んでいたら、それ以上に裏があったりして。恐ろしい。でも、思えば教室って、たぶん、そうだった。通過した多くの人にとっては、今となっては、なんでそんなことに囚われてるの？と思うような、昔の出来事かもしれない。でも、何ものにも全く囚われてない人っているんだろうか。気づいていないだけで、きっと今もそれに代わる何か、一歩外の世界から眺めればちっぽけで些細な何かに、やっぱり囚われてるんじゃないかと思う。
その息苦しさが、生々しくて、本当に怖かったです。
ミステリと呼べるかどうかとか、専門家じゃないのでわからないですが、わたしはとてもドキドキハラハラしましたよ。
