1年前の6月23日の夜明け前，私の目の前で友人は同級生の男子生徒からナイフで刺され亡くなった。葬式では泣いていた友人達も時の経過と共に彼女の話題が少なくなり，私は罪の意識にさいなまれていた。そして，今日友人の命日に亡くなった場所で，左膝をつき右手を頭上に掲げ，自分の胸に持って行き，左手を地面すれすれにおろし右手に重ねる青年に出逢う･･･

第140回直木賞受賞作品。人の死と人の生の両端にあるものを，悼む人（主人公：坂築静人）を中心とした3人の視線から描いていく物語である。読む人によって色々な感想を抱くと思うが，私は人として，そして人の親として涙無しでは読めない作品であり，最近の本の中では最高の物語の一つであったと感じた。読み終えたあとは爽やかな気持ちになるものの，自分そして他人の存在がいままでと違うものとなり，心に大きな重いものを残してくれる物語であった。

著者の「永遠の仔」はこれまで読んだ本の中でも最上位に入る読み応えのある本だった。寡作で知られる作家の久しぶりの新刊であり、直木賞受賞作品であるということで手に取った。

前もって死を扱う暗くて重い小説だろうと覚悟はしていたが、想像以上に心が揺さぶられ、ページをめくる手が重くなるようなストーリーだった。

死んだ人の亡くなった場所を訪れ「悼み」を続ける主人公「静人」の周りには、それを否定する人、共感する人、見守る父母など多くの人がおり、主人公の行動を理解しようと苦しむ。

著者は読者にも「悼む人」をどう思うかと問うているように思えた。最初は「気持ちが悪い、重い」という否定的な感情、「それも一つの生き方で大切なこと」という肯定的な感情、本を読みながら様々な感情が生まれ、読者もまた小説世界の登場人物として「悼む人」に接しているような感覚になる本であった。

　天童荒太はどこへ行くのかというようなことが、確かどこかの書評に書いてあった。彼のファンとして「包帯クラブ」に通じるものが感じられはしたが、もっとずっと重く明るさというか、展望がないところがとてもきつい。
「悼む人」はやっぱり本の最後はこういう終わり方だろうなと思う通りだし、倖世との関係もこうなるしかないだろうし・・・自分は絶対に「悼む人」のようには生きられないし、「悼む人」が世界に広がることは不可能に近いだろうし・・・
　天童荒太の作品は、宗教的な部分があっても最終的に宗教にならないところが好きなのだが、どうやって消化していこうか考えてしまう。「悼む人」の「悼み」が個人的なものであるのだから、「悼み」の仕方はそれぞれ個人で良いとする、自分の「悼み」の仕方を生きる中で思索していくことなのかなと・・・それでは浅いというか何というか・・・天童さんあなたは本当にどこに行くのでしょうか？
　そんなことを考えさせてしまうという意味でも読んでみるべき本だとは思います。
