高校二年の学園物としては，荻原規子さんの名作 樹上のゆりかご がある．男性の作者に女の子はどうかなと思ったが雰囲気がかなり似ているので安心した．二人のヒロイン，横浜のカオリと福岡に移ってしまったサナエの交互に語る形で物語は進行する．二人の剣道は個性を反映して正反対であるが，そのすき間を突いてさまざまな思いがけない出来事がおこる．そのたびに二人の剣道は次第に磨かれてゆく．そうして最後のクライマックスが各人別に待ち構えていて，物語は爽やかに終る．これほど純粋に楽しめた話は久しぶりだ．推薦．

前作の武士道シックスティーンと今回のセブンティーンに共通しているのが、装丁（凝った意匠）に隠し玉があることです。本を手に取った方は気付かれたかもしれませんが、栞（しおり）の紐（ひも）が二本ついています。辞書などの分厚い書籍ではたまに見かけるのですが、単行本の小説には珍しいと思います。拍手を送りたいのはその色の組み合わせです。剣道の試合を見たことがある人にはピンとくるでしょう・・・。是非、本をご確認ください。

物語は、高校２年生の女子剣道部員二人「磯山香織」と「甲本早苗」が主人公。

ライバルにして戦友、同志にして親友。共に目指した「武士道」の道・・・。九州と神奈川に分かれることとなった二人の、泣き笑いの剣道部ライフが交互に描かれるが、何度か交差する時間を通してそれぞれの精神的な成長の様子が見えてきます。

練習や試合の場面の描写は具体的でわかりやすく、剣道経験者だったら違和感なく読めると思います。剣道を知らない人には・・・どうなのでしょう？？？（笑）

主人公二人の対照的な性格やライバルたちの様子、周りの大人や家族との日常もきめ細かく書かれていて楽しめま すし、特に剣道道場の「達人」や、有名な「武勇伝」の持ち主にして一癖も二癖もある「名物教師」などの存在は物語に奥行きを与えています。

ちょっと読んだ感じは現代女子高生のコメディータッチの日記風ですが、主人公たちの「強くなりたい」という思いが昂じて起る波乱を通して、「武士道」精神 の輝きが目を惹きます。今時の女子高生と「武士道」との組み合わせに？？？とも思えますが、様々なエピソードの中で、彼女たちが叫ぶ切実な言葉の中に、彼 女たちなりの「武士道」精神が感じられて感動的なのです。
