北京五輪の最終日に前編の「文革篇」に続いて「開放経済篇」を読み終えました。　北京五輪の開会式、閉会式の演出はくしくもこの作品の作者ユイホアの「活きる」を映画化したチャンイーモウ監督の演出でした。　とてもくどくて、しつこくて、いい加減にしてくれと思いながらも次の展開がどうなるのかと結局は最後まで見てしまいました。　この作品も同じような感じで２巻の大作ですがあっという間に読んでしまいました。　作者が後書で述べているような「西洋が４００年かけてきた中世から現代までの変化を中国はたった４０年で経験した」激動の時代が、兄弟の幼いころの悲惨を極めた貧困生活と文革下の暴力、成長してからの後篇のドタバタ悲喜劇を通じて見事に描き出されています。　文学作品としてすばらしいと思います。おまけですが下手な中国解説書よりよほど中国のことがよく分かります。

前作「活きる」は読んでいません。
ただ映画化されており、唯一観ていなかった純正中国時代のチャン・イーモウ監督の作品だっため、劇場まで観に行きました。映画について言えば、個人的には最初の１５分で「間違えた」と感じ退場しそうになりました。が、頑張って最後まで観たら、完全にはまりました。
その原作者であり、上巻「文化革命」の方に興味があったので読みました。それと比べると、下巻はますます破天荒に走り「何だこりゃぁ！」でしたが、上・下巻でひとつの作品として考えると、共産主義国家の「文革」からまた一転した「市場開放」の悲劇を物語っており、痛烈な現代資本主義批判であることが判りました。しかも、作家独自の素朴ながらも辛辣なユーモアのセンスが光っており、下巻だけについて言えば、単純に荒唐無稽な実験小説として楽しめます。
一冊の本としては、中国の作家にしか書けない内容を、かつ当・作者にしか書けない表現で勝負したことが「一本！」だと評価します。それも小手先の技ではなく、豪快な大技、そして圧倒的なパワーで。
しかも、したたかに日本批判を「お笑い」で忍び込ませて。
既にわかっていましたが、改めて「中国人のバイタリティー」には勝てないと思いました。

おそるべき作品である。えげつなさすぎる設定にもかかわらず非日常を感じさせないのは中国の懐の深さだと笑えたが、ふと日本人作家でここまで書ける人間がいるかと思うとさびしくなった。楡周平の「骨の記憶」が比較的近いと思うがどうだろうか。
