　不倫旅行で訪れたパナリア島で，「ホーラ」という山上の廃墟に迷い込んだら，あるはずのない教会で，マリア様のような姿を女性の姿を目撃した・・・。
　主人公は，バイオリニストの中年女性。彼女が，不毛な不倫関係から，いかに自分の生業（バイオリンを弾くこと）を取り戻すかという，一種の成長物語である。退嬰的な町・ホーラの伝説や，そのホーラが才能ある者を「招く」という，謎めいた現象を描写しており，それなりには楽しめた。
　が，いつもの篠田節子にしては，ズシンという衝撃がなく，あっさりストーリーが終わってしまった，という感じ。せっかく「ホーラ」という魅力的な舞台設定があったのに，それが生かしきれていないような気がして，残念だった。

エーゲ海の小島にあるホーラは、過酷な歴史を背景とする「死都」だ。
そこで繰り広げられる事象は、まるで幽霊話の様であり、現実と非現実の間を行き交う。
それは怪奇きわまりなく、妖しい雰囲気に、引き込まれそうになる。
主人公は、不倫関係にある日本人男女だ。

これらは、果たして幻想なのだろうか？
本作品は、一本のヴァイオリンと、歴史や宗教を背景に、きわめて現実的な考察を行う。

その考察は、知的に、人生の後半を見詰めている。
特に、キリスト教や仏教そのものについても、深く言及する。
そのスタンスは、宗教を儀式の時に利用する程度の、宗教との弱い関わりを基調とする。

著者の人生を見詰める眼は、ことさら深い。
それは、あたかも、生よりも死に重点が置かれている様だ。

現在文壇の、重鎮の一人に位置する著者の、知的エンターテインメント作品だ。

バイオリニストとして活躍していながらも自らの才能の限界を自覚している女性が主人公。
生活力はなくピアニストとしての才能に恵まれながらも、それを活かせない夫と自分にすがりつくばかりの老いた母親を足かせのように感じながら、
力強く生き、家族を養う男性との不倫関係を継続し、旅行に出る。
その旅先で起こる不可解な事象は、神の差し伸べた救いなのかホーラに邪な力なのか。
神に救いを求めたい気持ちと自意識との狭間で主人公が見出すものはなんなののか。

篠田さんの他の作品にも見られる、生きるという事への明快な姿勢がそこにもあるように思いました。Xωρα(ホーラ)―死都
