恋人の結婚を控えて新居に引っ越した志郎。そこは幽霊マンションが近くにあったりそして目の前の空き地もいわくありげだった…。人間の思考を持つ「新しい猫」と人間のお話。★朱川さんと言えば、もちろんホラーです。そしてこれもホラー。★猫って「化け猫」とかそういうちょっと怖いイメージもあるだけに、このお話はそれに結びついてゾクッとする部分がありました。★もちろん猫達の復讐劇の裏には、ちゃんとそれなりのワケがあるんですがね…。★ラストでスメラギの孤独な胸の内がシミジミと描かれていて…切ないです。★今まで朱川さんは短編ばかりでしたが、実は長編も魅力的です。

表紙は幻想的だったので、優しいファンタジー作品かと思ったら、
これが全くの見当違いで、恐ろしい話でした。

結婚間近の恋人にも話せない隠し事をもつ、主人公・志郎が、
ちょっとしたミスから、人間と同じ様な知恵を持つ猫たちの攻撃対象なってしまうお話です。
いろいろな悩みを抱えながらも頑張っていた志郎が、
我慢の限界で怒りを爆発させるシーンでは、人間の醜さが一気に表面に出て、
なんだか人を信用できない気分にさせられました。
また、次々と車で猫をひき殺す描写があまりに多く、
志郎ではないですが、読んでいるわたしもかなり落ち込みました。
猫好きの人にはお勧めできないかも。
ただサイドストーリーの、子どもを無くした父親が猫のおかげで立ちなおるシーンは、
感動的で涙ものです。

起承転結の”転”までは少し長く感じるかもしれませんが、
後半はあっという間です。
エピローグがちょっと蛇足に思え、締まりがなかったのが残念でした。

物語には、終始、たくさんの猫が登場する。
その猫のボス的存在が、流麗な白色のスメラギだが、この銘々は主人公の志郎による。

構図は、猫ＶＳ人間であり、内容は、かなり壮絶だ。
戦闘的場面は、あまりに壮絶過ぎて、本から眼をそむけたくなる程だ。
加えて、人間の欲望の醜さが、鮮やかに描かれているが、悪いのは人間ばかりの様な気がしてくる。

また、長編作品としての、バランスに、少々難がある。
特に、前半は、動きが少なく、緩慢な印象だ。

後味は、あまり良くない。
ただ、著者が、人生を見つめる眼は、鋭い。
