八篇の短編集だが、前の方に配列されている作品を読んだ時点では、まだ、強く惹かれるものを感じなかった。
描こうとしているテーマそのものを掴みきれず、物語の展開の意外性ばかりを、当初は、強く感じた。

ところが、収録されている作品を連続して読んでいるうちに、時を忘れて、のめり込んだ。
作品群の持つ、独特な喪失感と、哀愁に、深く酔いしれる様になった。
それは、三番目に配置されている「ヒッチハイク」あたりからだ。
四番目に配置されている「終電は一時七分」はとどめだ。
そこから先は、むさぼる様に、読み進んだ。

これらの作品群は、短編集として、まとめて示されると、大変面白い。
手に馴染む、ソフトカバー本で、添付されている白黒写真が、雰囲気を盛り上げる。

全作品を読了してみると、それぞれの作品が、帰納的に、一定のテーマを表現している様に感じる。
それは、あまり爽快なものではないが、読者を夢中にさせる、魅力を放っている。

本書は、一冊の短編集という単位で、大きな読み応えを感じる。

直木賞受賞作「切羽」でファンになった著者の短編集は、期待を裏切りませんでした。小説でしか描けない世界を描いて秀逸で、ああ、小説ってやっぱいいよなぁ、と感じ入りました。奇抜なアイデアやプロット、幼稚な観念性だけを頼りに、雑駁な文章で書かれた作品が多い中で、光っています。
終電は1時七分、島の思い出、よそのひとの夏、が特にすばらしく、２度読み返しました。
島の思い出、よそのひとの夏は、私小説的です。母親の描き方に、うなりました。もしかして著者は、すぐれた私小説作家になれる人かも、という印象を強く持ちました。
これからは著者の新刊は必ず読もうと思います。
「切羽」は、なぜ直木賞だったんだろう。芥川賞でもいいのに。
普段小説を読まない人で、芥川賞だけは話題として読む、という人けっこういます。そうした人を小説好きの読者にする機会を、みすみす逃すような作品の受賞が多すぎます。

八編の短篇集をおさめたもの。井上荒野さんのものの描きかたが潔い。例えば、おせんべいを割ったように笑うとか。そしてどの物語も終わり方が潔い。そのために、登場人物の日常生活を営む時のちょっとしたズレや、恋愛のちょっとしたもつれや、収まりどころがつかないと思われる物語も、すっと幕が引かれる気分で終わる。全ては恋愛小説である。そして全てはどこかが不安定である。
旦那とのちょっとした諍いからヒッチハイクをする女や、タイトルにもなっている「夜を着る」は、お隣の旦那と一緒に、浮気相手と一緒の自分の主人の後をつける物語だ。
帯に書かれている（T温泉に旦那がいない。T温泉に旦那がいる。T温泉に旦那と女切り捨てるような終わり方も見事である。
「I島の思い出」は母と二人で、亡くなった父がいい処だと言っていた島へ旅行する物語だが、一見私小説風である。
装丁が夜の列車の写真でを使い、イジーな雰囲気なのも短篇に合っている。
終わりよければ全て良しと書いて終わりたい。
