手紙でなく、メールでもない冷蔵庫の扉につけられたメモが語りかける飾り気のない母娘のやり取りが深い情感をもって魂を揺さぶる人生の書簡です。産婦人科医として忙しい日々を送る母と、すれ違い顔を合わせる機会も少ない娘が、冷蔵庫のメモに暖かい心遣いで言葉を刻んで、それぞれに安らぎを感じていきます。買い物のリスト・ペットのこと・ボーイフレンド・学校の試験が話題とされて、平和な日常が当たり前に続きます。けれど、徐々に不安が忍び寄ってきて母の心配である病魔（乳癌）が現実になります。少しずつ母娘の関係がぎくしゃくして行き、娘は小さな頃に母が離婚した父の元へ逃げ込みます。母娘は似たもの同士なのでしょうか、頑固で強情ですが気持ちを吐き出してから、すっきりとして和解します。母はようやく娘を一人前の大人として認め、今の自分自身と人生について真正直な心情を打明けます。母は最期に残していく娘に対して誇りを感じます。そして・・・・・。
とても短い作品ではありますが読み終えるのが惜しいような気にさせてくれます。何処にでもある家庭の原風景に突然訪れた悲運が切なく、かわいそうで胸がつまり自然に涙が滲み出てきました。久し振りに泣きながら、健康で普通に生きていられる事に感謝を捧げたいと思いました。少し心が寂しくなったり気弱になった時に読み返したら自分を励まし勇気を与えてくれそうな、心震わせる感動の一冊です。

行間を読む能力が無ければただのくそ小説。
しかし、メモとメモの間のやりとりを想像させるという作者の意図を感じ取り、
真剣に考えながら読めば絶対泣ける！
感情移入するって素晴らしいことだと思う。

文章が短い以上に、内容が希薄なのは、メモ書きという目新しそうな形式を採用したせいだろう。心情を吐露するまえに、客観的な状況を説明しなければならないから。それから、どうにも気になったのは、「お母さん」という呼び方。「ママ」のほうが、メモの軽さにも、ティーンの女の子の心情にも合って、もっと話全体が光ってきたのでは？　でも、原書で読めば、自然な口語英語が覚えられそう。
