　奈良時代末期を舞台にしたミステリー＋ファンタジー＋歴史小説。日本史の教科書の中でしか知らず、私には馴染みのなかった奈良時代が、生き生きとした人物造形と情景描写で身近に感じられました。聖武天皇から桓武天皇までの時代、東大寺の大仏建立、正倉院への宝物献納、恵美押勝の乱、道鏡の陰謀などを題材に、主人公夫婦の正義感あふれる活躍を、明るく色彩豊かに、そしてユーモラスに描いています。
　タイトルどおり、作品の要所では冥界と現世が二重写しで描かれています。その描き方は、「私」という存在が流れめぐる「気」のかりそめの凝集であるという東アジア的な思想に支えられていて好感が持てました。歴史の勉強を無味乾燥な固有名詞の暗記と思っている高校生に読んでもらいたい一冊です。

　本作品は『われはフランソワ』（新潮社）や『瑠璃の翼』（文藝春秋）などで
発揮された手法、すなわち綿密なリサーチのもとに存在した人物を氏の視点から脱構築し、
見事に虚構化している。

その世界には日本古来にあるモノノケと付喪神の世界が展開され、
山之口流の日本史解釈プラスユーモアミステリとして面白おかしく読める。
本書は、日本の歴史正史や歴史的事実のみで
いまいち親近感のない名前だけの実体のない人々が、
山之口氏の素晴らしい肉づけによってよみがえり、
まさに映画を見ているような感覚で読むことができる物語だ。
日本版聊齋志異といっても過言ではない。

　さらにこの天平冥所図会はただのユーモアミステリではない。
皇室を舞台にした憂国の士を描いた物語でもある。
現在日本は、長期的な視野によって善悪を判断する役人も減り、
権力者や既存権力に媚びへつらう人々が跋扈し、
自らの保身に回っている現状である。
この作品はそのような日本の現状を痛烈に批判しつつ、
自らの信念のもと、守るべきものを持った人々を描いた物語でもある。
ぜひご一読あれ！

主人公をはじめとして実在の人物や事件を題材にしていますが、怨霊や神様もばんばん出てくるポップな「天平時代早分かりファンタジー」。
読んでからWikipediaなどで天平時代を調べると、人物や事件のイメージが明確になってすんなり頭に入るというオマケつき。
高校時代、日本史を勉強してるときに出会いたかったと思いました。

第2話の「正倉院」は、後に正倉院に納められることになる聖武天皇ゆかりの品の奉献目録作成プロジェクトのリーダーとなった主人公・戸主の奮戦記。
素晴らしく面白かった！　天平時代の『プロジェクトX』です。

上司はプロジェクトを出世に利用しようとし、上司のライバルは妨害工作に走り、仕様変更は入り、期日は迫る、人材は足りない、プロジェクトメンバーは疲労困憊、まさに「デスマーチ」。そして悲劇はおこる。
士気は低下、さらにクライアントである天皇家内部の確執からプロジェクトの中止さえ危ぶまれ……。
主人公はこの危機をどう乗り越えるのか！
――というお話。『プロジェクトX』だけどファンタジー。

読み終えると、正倉院関係の資料を見る目が変わります。
