17編の短編の主人公はすべて「小学5年生の男の子」。
急に女子を意識しはじめる男の子。
家族の死に直面する男の子。
転校で友達と離れ離れになってしまった男の子・・・。
それぞれが自分のこれまでの経験値ではいっぱいっぱいの思いを抱え、
経験を重ねながら成長していく姿を描きます。

そういえば、小学5年生くらいの時期って、
体の面でも心の面でも子供から大人への変化が最もよく感じられる年頃なのしれません。
この年頃の女の子は体が一気に大人の女性へと変わりつつあり、
それと並行して態度やしぐさも女っぽくなり、まさに男女の差が大きく出る時期です。
（あと一年もすれば男子は声変わりがはじまり、さほどの差はなくなるのだけれど）
こんな時期って人生の中のほんの一瞬にすぎないのに、
ここにうまく焦点を当てるなんてさすが重松さんです！

重松さんでなければこんな温かいまなざしで少年たちを見つめることはできないでしょう。
懐かしさと、かけがえのない時間のまぶしさが愛おしい作品です。

重松氏が書く作品に流れている暖かい気持ちが今回も
たっぷり流れています。
ちょっとマンネリ？な気分も読んでいて感じるんですが
重松氏の作品にはいま現在、「子供時代」を送っている少年少女に対する
深い愛情を感じます。
きっと書かざるを得ないような使命感にも似た気分で
多感な頃を題材に使われるんでしょう。
作者のそういう人間性に時々触れたいから、新刊が待ち遠しく
そして毎回裏切られません。
同じ子供を持つ親としては、彼のようなまなざしを持つ小説家が
つむぐ作品は心に沁みます。
今回も5年生の子供たちが出てきますが、
「この頃ってこんなちっぽけなことで死ぬほど恥ずかしがったり
落ち込んだり、喜んだりしたよなあ」と懐かしくなってしまいます。
そして重松氏にとっては何十年も前のその頃の気持ちをまだ
新鮮に再現できる力量が、作者の素晴らしいところだと思います。

小学生らしさを持っているけれど、少し、大人びた視点も入り混じっている素敵なお話です。現役小学五年生でもさくっと読めますし、大人も、少年少女時代を振り返ってみながら、青春を味わえます。
