町工場を営んでいた男性が電車に轢かれて死亡してしまう。
彼は、轢死する三ヶ月ほど前に傷害保険に加入しており、
そして彼には多額の金を必要とする理由があった。
彼の死は、保険金を得るための自殺だったのか。
それとも事故死だったのか。
主人公であるベテラン保険調査員・村越努が、
この謎を解決するために行動を起こす。

良い意味で地味な作品。
ともすると退屈になってしまいがちな物語の展開なのだが、
読んでいて引き込まれたのは作者の力量だろう。
単に読みやすいというだけではない、確かな筆力を感じた。

終わり方がやや慌しいような気もしたが、
逆にいえばムダを削ぎ落としたようにも感じられて、
それはそれで心地良い印象を受けた。
今後の作品も楽しみだ。

とても今年６０歳になる方の作品とは思えない。かっちりとしていながら、なんというか、加齢臭を感じない、壮年の文章で、どのページにもゆるみが無く張っている。冗談ではなく、今の６０歳は本当にまだまだ現役で気力あるなあと、そういう感想を持った。

物語はたんたんと進む。「犯人探し」（この小説では自殺かどうかの事実探し）の小説は、山ほどあるが、上記の文章力、リアリティーがあって、途中で読み止めることは不可能な、しっかりした作品となっている。派手さはないが、堅実な素晴らしい作品だ。

’０６年度、「第１３回松本清張賞」受賞作。この賞は、ここしばらく歴史小説や時代小説が受賞していたが、今回久々に現代ミステリーが栄冠を手にした。

’０６年、「週刊文春ミステリーベスト１０」国内部門第５位にもランクインしている。

ＪＲ膳所（ぜぜ）駅でホームから転落、轢死した老人。彼には心臓を患う幼い孫娘がいた。その命を救うための臓器移植には高額な費用が必要なのだという。死の三ヶ月前に加入していた傷害保険の支払いを巡り、保険会社から調査を依頼されたベテラン調査員・村越の執念の調査が始まる。

果たして老人の死は事故なのか、それとも自殺なのか？　定年退職目前の調査員による文字通り足を使った執念の調査行、終盤で二転三転する緻密なプロットはまさに“清張ばり”。

本書は、６０才の新人作家・広川純の、デビュー作とは思えない的確で緻密な描写が光っており、地道な保険調査を軸に波瀾に富んだ人間ドラマが、著者の年輪を感じさせる筆力で活写されている。
圧倒的なリーダビリティーを持っており、全選考委員の賞賛を集めたのも頷ける傑作である。
