恋の予感、プロポーズ、妊娠・・・
何かを「待つ」、8人の女性を描く短編集。

女は（男もそうなのかもしれないけど）常に今よりも幸せになりたいと願っている。
現状が幸せでもそれでもあと少し・・・と願う欲張りな生き物である。
そんな女のズルさと底の見えない欲望を描いています。

最終的にヒロインたちは
待っていたものを手に入れることはできていないのかもしれない。
でも待つということに関しての
目先を変えたことによって「待ち」から解放される。
そのすがすがしさがとても良い作品でした。

すべてのお話に喫茶店が登場するという
味のあるこだわりも◎
生活感の感じられる描写にも親近感を感じます。

８人の待っている女は、今の生活を否定しているわけでも、逃げてるわけでもない。
ただ、幸福に、今よりちょっと幸福になりたいだけだ。
その小さなうっぷんが少しだけ弾けてしまう時、８人の女はやっと待っている女から開放される。
大切にしてる今の生活で、何か流してしまえない小さな引っ掛かり。
止まってくれない人生の時間を解っている女たちは、待ち時間切れを感じながら自分を見極めてゆく。
女はおばさんにもなるけど、少女でも、母でもあり、生涯女なのだ。
その矛盾した状態が、待ちという女になって表現されている。

恋愛と結婚を主なテーマとして、今風の（古い表現ですいません）女性たち（３０代あたりが主でしょうか）の微妙な現実の姿をきびきびと描き出していく作品です。私は男なので、この女性たちの暮らしや心理状態がどれぐらい真実に接近しているのか判断がつきかねますが、しかし、たとえば、いまだ独身でいる知り合いのあの女性、あの彼女たちのリアリティって、たぶんそういうことなのだろうなあ、というような感想を何度も抱いたことだけは確かです。
プライドの強さや計算のし過ぎが、「女の幸せ」を自分からわずかに遠く離れたどこかへと追いやり、わかってはいるけれど、ね、という自己反省の末のある種の達観の境地と、なんでこうなるのよ、ねえ、というこの理不尽な世界への問いかけとが相半ばします。けれど、ときに周りのひとたちとの新しいふれあいのなかで、今までになかった〈私〉を見つけ出して行くこともあるようです。だいたいの話が、あまり満足できない彼女たちの現在の日常を紹介した後に、そこからそれていく心の新展開を示しながら終わっていきます。
その新展開には、それぞれの明暗があります。あるいはけっこう悲惨な（彼氏いない歴１０年オーヴァーの彼女の、孤独をマスターしきった将来の生活？）、あるいは本当にお幸せにな（意地悪な姑とのやりとりの末に出た結論の先にある人生！）それぞれの「これから」が暗示されながら、物語は続きながらも余韻を残して小説は終わり、色々なイメージを残して充実した読後感があります。
だれが読んでも楽しめると思いますが、やはり、恋愛・結婚・妊娠、といったキーワードに敏速に反応してしまう女性の人たちにこそ、おすすめしたい本であります。
