　伊良部一郎医師の人気シリーズ第3弾。残念ながらまだ文庫化されていないが、人気ぶりからして時間の問題であろう。本書は従来のテイストに加え、話題性と社会性を盛り込んでおり、伊良部医師もいよいよ表舞台にご登場かという印象を強く与えてくれた。某新聞社の会長兼球団オーナーの威厳ぶりや時代の風雲児と呼ばれた某社社長の人生哲学などを描いた「オーナー」や「アンポンマン」といった作品は、懐かしい感慨めいた雰囲気に満ちている。「カリスマ稼業」もおそらく同様であろう。

　話題性を優先する大衆メディアは報道内容が偏重し、十分な論議や総括をすることなく、次なる話題に飛びつき読者の関心を巧みに誘導する効能を有している。むろんメディアのみの責任ではないが、メディアの作用は実に大きい。かつての某IT企業による球団獲得・その後のラジオ放送社買収騒動事件は多くの人にとってすでに「過去のもの」として記憶されているだろう。「時価総額世界一」と豪語された人生哲学も今では嘲笑の対象とみなされているのかもしれない。本書はいずれもそうした主題を「過去の話題」としてではなく、そこに潜む人間の深層心理とともにヘビーな作風というよりは新鮮な趣をもった内容として再生されてくれているような気がした。

　とはいえ、そうした話題性・社会性が注目される反面、伊良部の活躍というか存在感が薄くなっているような印象も拭えない。伊良部による患者の症状の治療に対する突拍子もないが核心を突いた発言とともに、奇抜な言動ぶりは相変わらず健在ではあるが、私にはそう映った。伊良部総合病院を離れての初の仕事ぶりを、その離島の「町長選挙」（本書の第4作品）と絡めて描いた作品も、やや腰砕け的なもののように思えた。とくにエンディングは物足りない感じであった。少なくとも『空中ブランコ』所収の作品群を超える出来ではない。次回作への強い期待を込めて今回は「星4つ」としたい。

おおむね皆さんと同じ意見です。期待してすぐに購入したのですが、大変ガッカリしました。確かに伊良部シリーズは期待していますが、「本を売る」ために無理やり書く必要は無いと思うのです。最近はテレビ化を頭に置きすぎた本がただでさえ多く、その腹が作品に見え隠れすると興ざめします。純粋で無い感じが、余計な贅肉を作品につけています。
マユミ、あんなんじゃなかったはずだし、本当に残念。

奥田英朗の作品が好きだ。
読んだ後爽やかな気分になれるから。
こんなことはありえない。でもいいのだ。小説なんだから。

伊良部医師は相変わらずめちゃくちゃな人で、引っ掻き回したまま去っていく。
「物事、死人が出なきゃ成功なのだ。」
と、バカボンのパパのような台詞を吐いて。
何故か納得してしまう。説得力なんか全然ないのに。
なんとなく元気が出る本だと思う。
