神の視点でつづられる、壮大な犬の歴史物語。
４頭の軍用犬から派生する様々な物語が語られます。あるものは狼と交配し、
あるものは純潔を保ち美を極める。またあるもの麻薬探知犬となり、戦闘を
極める犬もいる。さらには宇宙へ飛び出し、伝説となる犬もいる。
独特の筆致で描かれる多種多様な犬達の人生は非常に興味深く、読者は血統
という壮大な歴史を一瞬のうちに追体験するのです。
果てしなく続く血の物語はどれも感動的で、類似の作品は読んだ事がありま
せん。貴重な体験でした。

一体何をどうすればこんな物語が思いつくのか、不思議でしょうがない。
４頭の犬から始まる、犬の現代叙事詩。
複雑な世界情勢も、歴史を動かす人間たちの情念も犬は感知しない。
歴史に利用され、時に歴史を動かしながら逞しく生きる犬たち。
人間のそれより感動してしまうのが凄い。
４頭の犬から始まった血統に、どう始末をつけるのかに期待したけど、意外にあっさり終わってしまった。

物語りも斬新だけど、それよりも目を惹くのが、独特すぎる文体。
個人的な話で申し訳ないけど、物語り抜きで文体だけで酔えるのはチャック・パラニュークの作品を読んで以来だった。
でも破壊力ではこちらの方が上かな？

続編（？）である「ロックンロール七部作」もあわせてオススメ。

こんな本、初めてだ。

これが読後感。
読んでいる間も、ため息をつきっぱなし。

というか、この人、何でこういう本を書こうと思ったんだろう？
この本を薦めてくれた知人とも「どうしたら、こんなもん、
書こうと思うんですかね」としばらく盛り上がった。

うーん。すごい。
最初、イヌの視点で描く20世紀、と聞いたときは、
「ガンバの大冒険」みたいに、
イヌがしゃべる荒唐無稽な話かと思ったんだけど、
あくまでもイヌはイヌなのに、そのイヌたちのエピソードを
辿っていくと、20世紀の戦争の歴史になる。

イヌよ、イヌ。おまえたちはどこにいる？

繰り返すが、何で、こんなもん、書こうと思ったんだろう？

これ読んでると、ギリシャの詩人ホメロスの『イリアス』を
思い出した。骨太な描写とか、語り口とか、場面転換の手法とか、
かなり似ていると思った。（だから、神話だろ？これ、と思った次第）

ある評論家が、常に新しい文学を創り出す人、
としてこの作者を紹介していたが、そのとおり。

気になって、この人の「ロックンロール七部作」も読んだけど、
これもまた、すごかった。うーん、なかなかです。
