はじめは軽いノリで「うん、うん、それで？」という感じで読み進んでいましたが、ラスト近く（個人的には｢パーキングエリア｣の章）で泣かされました。いかにも吉田修一という感じです。

主人公の小心者的心情（たとえば、｢衝撃｣的な行動の内実は意外に冷静なものであると思ってみたり、先輩の飲みをむげに断ってしまったが、あれでよかったのかと悩んでみたりする）に共感しているうちにストーリーに引き込まれてしまうのです。

地方から東京に出てきたものの、都会の洗練さになじめきれなく、どこか土臭い。かといって地方の生活には戻れないような。何者かになろうと東京に出てきたものの、何者になれたわけでもなく、それでも現実と折り合いを付けて、それなりに東京で生きている。地方出身の東京人が読むと妙な親近感を覚えてしまうストーリーです。

小説の形式は、｢日曜日たち｣系列ですが、「日曜~」より洗練されています。それゆえ、あえて４つ星にしました。うますぎるのですヨ。

同氏の小説「最後の息子」の続編。
結婚し、子供をもった３０代男性の日常を上手く描いている。
吉田修一の作品のほとんどに言えることだが、リアリティに富み、主人公が身近に感じられ、作品に入り込んでしまう。
「最後の息子」を読んだ人には、是非とも読んでいただきたい。

待ちに待った新作！！発売日前日に届き、その日に読み終わりました。
一見すると短編集のようだが、実は中編物である。
主人公は筒井、都心の会社に勤務する男性で、離婚経験のある妻、その
連れ子、そして義母と同居している。

私が吉田作品で好きな点、それは何気ない日常を上手く切り取って作品にする作家であるからなのだが、今回の作品はそれが如実に表されている。どちらかというと、初期の作品(熱帯魚、パーク・ライフ)に近い作品といえるだろう。
