参った。
「壬生義士伝」の泣かせっぷりにはいたく感動したが、これは更に読み物として上回る傑作。全ての登場人物に愛を与え命を吹きこみ、史実からここまで引き出すその筆力にただ脱帽。

号泣とまではいかぬが、読むほどに心に染入る刹那さ。「だあれもうらむのやぁない。」という台詞を思い出す度、胸が締め付けられる。一言一句逃さず読んで欲しい一冊だ。

「壬生義士伝」を見てから、是非それ以前も見てみたいと思っていた私にとっては最高です！やはり浅田版新選組はしっくりきます。特に、斎藤さんと沖田さんの偏屈さ加減は随一ですね。（でも前作に比べて、まだ若い為か大人しい気もします。）
内容的には、関係者の女性達の目を通した新撰組といったところでしょうか。

こんなにもキャラの立場に即した発言が描かれている作品なんて、珍しいと思います。お蔭で、どれが真実なのか分からなくなってきますが。
それ位、同じ内容に対しそれぞれが別々のことを言うんです。
人間描写が上手いと思います。非常に。
是非是非！特に女性にお勧めです。

非常に多くの語り手がいて、てんでに少しずつ違う見解をしゃべっている。どれ一つとして的はずれではなく、かつどんぴしゃの正解ではない。叙述的な地の文（客観的な正解を書く部分）が非常に少ない構成でありながら読者が破綻しない。これが浅田次郎の力量ということだろうか。なんだか芥川龍之介の藪の中のようだと思って読み進めていくと、芹沢鴨殺害に向かって流れが急速に集約されていく。さてこのクライマックスの語り手はというと・・・・・。書いてしまうとネタバレなので伏せるが、私にとっては意外な人物であった。壬生義士伝も読み返すと巧いと思ったが、初読では感動が先に来た。今回は「巧い」が先に来たという印象。壬生義士伝とは、題材こそ近いがやはり別物。でも自信を持って人に勧められる本といえる。
