主人公は蒲田で一人暮らしをしている女性、橘優子。躁鬱病持ちの彼女の日々をつづった物語です。なんだか予想と違ってびっくり！なんというか、大人味というか（笑）。帯に「夢で出会ったみたいな、妙に懐かしい人々の、東京・蒲田のひと夏、心に刻まれた物語」って書いてあったから、そういうノスタルジック系（？）を想像していたのです…が！違いました。いやぁ、びっくりしました。そう、うん、大人…。（ちょっとごまかし。）
そして、彼女の日常になじんできたところで、このラスト。取り残されてしまったような、置いてけぼりをくらったような、ぷっつり断ち切られてしまったような…。

色んな人物が登場する。
主人公を含め、みな性癖がある。闇もある。
でも、この作品では、闇としては描かれてない。
暗く描こうと思えば、どこまでも描ける題材だ。
かわりに、何かあたたかい物が作品を包む。
読み終わると、なぜか、ほっとした。

　「直感で蒲田に住むことにした」で始まる、独身女性の日常。この一文からしてそうなのだが、この小説には、ステレオタイプな男女像や男女関係は一切出て来ない。例えば「TVタックル」あたりで闘わされるジェンダー論みたいなものが不毛に思えるくらい“進んだ”（しかも進んでいることに力が入っていない）男女像、男女関係が描かれている。登場人物はEDの都議、鬱病のヤクザ、イクことを拒む痴漢、選挙のボラバイトに精を出す40過ぎの居候、そしてこうした男たちと付かず離れずの主人公。文章中にもあるが、彼らと彼女の関係は決して“夫婦にも恋人にも見えない”のだ。そして、こうした“ずれてる”関係に、現代人は癒される。主人公が鬱病のヤクザやイクことを拒む痴漢と知り合ったのはインターネット。ネットの発達はこうしたステレオタイプではない男女関係、人間関係を創造していくのだな、と読んでいて思った。ただ、この小説世界は現実をトレースしている訳ではなく、人々はまだまだ固定した人間関係に囚われている。この小説に「プラセボ（偽薬）」という章があるが、まさにそれはこの小説のことであって、ニセモノだと知らないで服用すると癒された気になるが、あとで真実を聞かされると、効いたかどうかがあやふやに思えてくる、そんな感じなのである。小説の中で主人公は「プラセボ（偽薬）」の効用を説いているが、まさに僕もその通りだと思う。この小説を読むととても気分が楽になるのだ、それがプラセボであったとしても。
