以前、川村記念美術館で展示してある実物を見て、激しく心惹かれたコーネル。彼の作品には確かに人の詩心を刺激して、言葉を紡ぎ出させる何かが存在している。決してポピュラーな芸術家ではないけれど、こういう世界に強く惹かれる人というのは、世界中にコンスタントにいるのだろう。

エドワード・ホッパー、ルネ・マグリット、キリコらにも同じ「何か」を感じている。

　詩人チャールズ シミックによる“箱の芸術家”ジョゼフ コーネル論。コーネルの作品をカラー写真で紹介しているのが嬉しい。
　コーネルは絵も描けず、彫刻も出来なかった20世紀の芸術家である。箱の中に人形、写真、コンパス、球、地図といったオブジェを配置し、ひとつの世界を構成する。それはいわゆるコラージュの技法である。その世界は、何を見い出し組み合わせるかという、着想と偶然が生み出す詩的世界、心象風景だ。技術主義、文脈主義から遠く離れたコーネルだけの世界である。本書が引いているルネ・マルグリットの言葉を借りれば「象徴的な意味を探す人は、像（イメージ）に内在する詩と神秘を捉えそこなう。」ということだろう。
　“コーネルの箱”は現代に置き換えれば“ヴァーチャル”ということかもしれない。リアルの中から自分にとって魅力のあるものだけを見い出し、組み合わせ、閉じ込める。だけど、問われるべきはその手法ではなく、切り取られた世界がどうであるか、それをどう捉え、感じるかということだ。コーネルの世界は自閉的だが詩的で美しく、シミックの捉え方、感じ方もまた素晴らしい。

ジョセフ・コーネル、白魔術師。

1903年12月24日、オランダ人の血を引く両親の元に生まれる。
17歳で父を亡くし若くして精神・金銭ともに家を支える。
甘美な少年時代の記憶を抱えたまま、マンハッタンで布地の仲買人。
そして美術家。

1972年12月29日、69歳。
ユートピア・パークウェイの自宅で亡くなる日の早朝、
妹エリザベスへの電話。

「私がもっと他人と打ち解けられる性格の持ち主だったら、
どんなによかったことかと思うよ」
人間が苦手だったがゆえに達成された結晶。

チャールズ・シミック、米の詩人。
1938年、ユーゴスラビア、ベオグラードうまれ。
「午前3時のほの暗さの中でも、
なんとなく明るくなれてしまう」（柴田元幸）詩人からの、
透徹する、オマージュ。

どこにもいる「いま・ここ」にそぐわない人間が、
偶然にもアメリカから零した非凡なる函、
どのようなイズムからも遠い、
ただコーネルだけの、そしてコーネルだけでない、
親密で深遠な函。
それをめぐる言葉を収めた二重入れ子の函。

そうした一冊。
