ちょっとした恋をして、結婚をして、子供が生まれて、家族になりました。
そう、わたしもそうやって今、家族とともに暮らしています。
家族の誰もが小さいけれども深い傷を抱えたまま生きています。
家族ってこんなにぼんやりと痛哀しいものだったのかと、妻になり親となって初めて気づきました。

この物語には家族それぞれの痛みと哀しみが、柔らかな感性で描かれています。
ズキンズキンとくるんじゃない、そうじゃなくて、もっとぼんやりとした、哀しみの実態が、大事に描かれています。
自分だけじゃないんだ、って思いました。

些細な言葉のひとつひとつが、ちくんと胸に突き刺さるたびに、

“読み手にとっての私小説”（ってそんなむちゃくちゃな定義があり得るのかどうかもわかんないんだけど・・・）みたい、と思いました。

好むと好まざるとに関わらず、誰しもが“家族”というものを、一度は持つのが、この世の常です。子供であったり、親になったり、立場を違えてそこに、ある意味、縛られています。『空中庭園』の不可思議さは、角田さんの「何ごともつつみかくさず」という、京橋家の設定があってこその、不可思議さ。深刻ぶらず、コミカル過ぎず、家族の一人一人が語りを請け負い、全体像が見えてくるところが、おもしろかったです。京橋家のような家族は、いないであろうという設定にまんまと絡めとられて、でも思い切り、字面とは乖離した部分で、私は“ああ、家族を素直に受け入れられず、表面だけいい子ちゃんしてた時代があったなあ”だとか、“ダンナも子供も一歩外にでりゃあ、何をやってるんだか・・・”という諦観とか、身に覚えのある感情に対面したのでした。
連載してたものをまとめた本ということですが、最後のコウの章だけトーンが違う気がするのは、ここが書き下ろしだからかな？コウの孤独がよく描かれていると思いました。「ひとりだったら秘密にならないものが、みんなでいるから隠す必要が出てくる」という言葉、言い得て妙だと納得しました。

何ごともつつみかくさず・・・という家族が、それぞれの胸の内に抱え込んだ闇を、鮮やかに描いています。そのそれぞれのズレが面白さとなっているのですが、マナもコウも母・絵里子のモットーを頭の隅に置いて、結構、家族のことを考える子に育っているのがいいなあ、と感じました。図らずも、角田さんの描いた『空中庭園』は、二重の意味において成功しているのではないでしょうか。
