母校の長山西小学校の廃校が決まり、校庭に眠るタイムカプセルを開けるために集まった同窓生。タイムカプセルを埋める時は輝かしい未来があるはずだった。しかしそうはならなかった。男女のクラス１の優等生、ガキ大将でヒーロー、クラス１の人気者の４人が２６年ぶりに再開するところからこの物語は始まります。

重松さんのエッセイを読むと「世の中は自分の思い通りにはならない。」の下りが何度も出てきます。この物語もその思い通りにならない未来が存分に描かれています。
しかしやっぱり人間は未来に期待し、それは無意味ではない事をこの長編の中で語っているような気がし、それがただ暗いだけの物語ではないようにしていると思います。

ラストは重松流の「ハッピーエンドではないけど一筋の光!が射す。」で、毎度おなじみの手法ですが、同じように泣かされました。

ちなみにこの物語を読むと、みんな未来の自分に手紙を書いてみたくなったり、タイムカプセルを埋めたくなるみたいです。この作品が名作の証ではないでしょうか。

ﾀｲﾑｶﾌﾟｾﾙを開けるために集まった長山西小学校の同窓生達、26年後の少年少女達、克也はﾘｽﾄﾗの危機を抱え、予備校講師の淳子は一時の勢いを失い、崩壊寸前の真理子と徹夫の家庭、ﾀｲﾑｶﾌﾟｾﾙを提案した白石先生は、彼らが卒業した後愛人に殺されていた。ｶﾌﾟｾﾙからでてきたのは、彼らの思い出の品と先生の手紙。彼らの現実と思い出が混じり合い長い夏が始まる、そしてみんな少し過去から力をもらい、先生のﾒｯｾｰｼﾞ『あなたたちはいま、幸せですか』をかみしめる。彼らは再び10年後に向けて新たなる思い出を封じ込める。ちょっと重い、重松ﾜｰﾙﾄﾞ、でも良かった
