トルーマン・カポーティの短編を村上春樹が訳し、山本容子の版画による挿絵で飾った。
アメリカの学校もないような田舎に住む少年。ストーリーはこの少年の視点で語られる。
祖父母、両親と「僕」の５人家族。だが、痩せた地所を嫌い貧しい生活から抜け出すこと、子供にきちんとした教育を与えるため、父は妻子３人で引っ越すことを決心する。

後に残される祖父母。少年は、祖父母とは別れたくはなく、引越しの日までに祖父がいつも語っていた「秘密のこと」を使って、いままで通り、いっしょに住めるようにしてくれるのではないか、と期待している・・。だが、冷厳と引越しの日はやってくる・・・。
少年の祖父への思いがあふれるストーリー。ラストがずっと後に残る・・・。

文体と展開にカポーティの初々しさが残る。
おじいさんに手紙を書くと言いながら１通で終ったり、
「おばあさん」の死も「おじいさん」の死すらも手紙で知らされる。
主人公の父親が両親の死に対し、家を離れ彼らを置き去りにしたときほどには
心情を表に出さないのか、作品には何の言及もない。
そんなあたりも淡々としてカポーティらしい。
