数年前、ある日、全くの予備知識なしに、このぐらいのページ数なら

楽に読めるかな？と思って、手に取ったのが「鍋の中」です。芥川賞受賞作家であったとか、話のあらすじさえ知らず、買いました。ゆっくりゆっくりかみしめる様に読み、読後、とても心が豊かになりました。半年に一度、読んだ本は処分するのですが、この本だけは、毎回「やっぱり手元に置いておこう」と思い、処分することができません。決して派手さはありませんが、素晴らしい本です。

　夏休みに四人の孫を預かることになったおばあさんと、その孫の話である。

『鍋の中』という本のことは、知っていたけれど、読んでいなかった。それが、ふっと出会ってしまった。引きずり込まれるように読んでしまった。たみちゃんという主人公の女の子の観察眼というか感性というか、それが、ごく普通っぽくていい。でも、それをこんな風に書く人はすごいと思う。

　おばあさんは、記憶がとぎれとぎれで、自分でもそのことを気にしたりしているけれど、そこには、ごく普通の人が、ごく普通の人生を送って、ごく普通に老いていく姿が感じられる。
　ごく普通のおばあさんと、ごく普通の子どもが、ごく普通に生きている一夏。それが、心にしみる。けなげさっていうのかな。

人って、いろんなことにいろんなふうに反応して生きているんだなあと思った。

第９７回芥川賞受賞作「鍋の中」を含む４篇。

「鍋の中」は、十代の男女4人のいとこが田舎の祖母の家で過ごす夏休みを描いている。主人公は１７歳の少女。祖母は８０歳。いとこたちが集ったのは、６０年前ハワイに渡った祖母の弟の息子から手紙が届いたのが発端。パイナップル農園で大金持ちになったらしい弟の家から連絡があったことで祖母の子どもたち（いとこたちの親だ）は勇んでハワイへ向かい、残された4人の孫が祖母の家に預けられることとなった次第。

祖母には１３人のきょうだいがいた。孫たちは祖母の記憶をひもとこうとあれこれ尋ねる。命の連鎖を思うときに抱く茫漠たる気持ち、自分はいったいどこからきた誰なのかと考えたときに覚える足場がぐらつくような頼りない感覚。それらが繊細なタッチというよりむしろ骨太な感じに描かれていておもしろい。

生と死、悲しみ、憂い、あわい性、少女特有の自己愛―そこから派生する矜持や引け目、自己憐憫―、ナイーブさと図太さ、それら諸々をすべて包括する大鍋・・・・・そこには大勢の血縁者たちが浮き沈みしている・・・・・何度読んでも好きだなあと思う作品だ。

「少女のひと夏」を書こうとする人がいたらこの作品は必ず読まなければならないと思う（これを手本にということではなく、こういうアプローチがあるのだと）。それ以前に文筆業を志すすべての人に読んでいただきたい。「何と何と炊いた」と書いているだけで味がある文章を生み出せる作家はそうはいない。もちろん何を志すかに関係なく、広くたくさんの人におすすめする。決して埋もれさせてはいけない名作だ。
