ジョーンズ女史の本にしては結構あっさりと読めたかなと思ったら、原書の発行は初期なんですね。でも彼女の魅力満載の素敵な本でした。
冤罪で犬の姿に変えられてしまった主人公の視点で進む話がとても面白いです。勿論自分の冤罪を晴らしたい、だけど犬としての特性を持ってしまった身体に振り回されたり、自分を助けてくれた少女を守るために頑張ったり。

発行当時のイギリスの社会情勢も絡んでちょっぴり切なさが残るけど、とてもいいお話です。

この本を読んだときは、ダイアナ・ウィン・ジョーンズの作品はこれで２冊目だったんですが、一冊目の「魔法使いハウルと火の悪魔」よりも速いペースで、一気に読んでしまいました。話の内容はそれほど込み入っておらず、ストレートな感じですが、これ以降に書かれたジョーンズ作品の中にもちらほら見える名前や文章などが出てきて、彼女の作品として楽しめることに変わりはありません。
ハラハラして、じれったくて、ほんわかで、かなり切なくて・・・内容はストレートでも、感情移入度数はかなり濃厚です。

好みは人それぞれと思いますが、動物からの視点や、星の性質をたくみに使った造語や性格付けなどがあり、動物ものが好きな人、星が好きな人は、思わずニヤリとなってしまう本なので、ハマリ間違いなしだと思います。

現にそんな私は見事にハマリました。おすすめです。

シリウス（レオ）と一緒に物語の中を駆け巡りました。今度は犬を見かけたら、「ヤッホー！」と声を掛けたくなってしいそう。素直にワクワクしながら読みました。でも、登場人物のその後が気になります。（今更続編は無いでしょうし。各自、想像せよ、ということでしょうか。）
