前半はさほどでもないが、後半の２章に、なかなか鋭い指摘が多かった。

特に二つ。まず、人間の経済活動・お金儲けは、必ずしも個人の幸せには直結しない。
でも、幸福につながるかのような幻想を我々は抱かされているという点。
誰もがうすうす感じていることを、アダム・スミスの引用や心理実験の成果をもとに語っており、
説得力があった。

次に、子どもを産み育てることも、そんなに大きな幸福ではないという点。
どの人間の文化にも、子育ては楽しいとの情報が埋め込まれている。
なぜなら、子育て＝幸福という図式がないと、やがて子孫が絶え、
それぞれの共同体は崩壊してしまうからだそうだ。
伝言ゲームを使った実験や、結婚後の夫婦の満足度グラフ、
実際に終焉を迎えたアメリカの宗教共同体の例が載っており、
ついじっくり読んでしまった。

これを読むと、子を持つのが本当にいいことかどうか、ちょっと考えてしまう。

ハーバード大心理学部の名物教授が書いた本で、この頃流行っている行動経済学がだいたいのテーマ。人間がいかに思い込みや先入観にとらわれやすいか、合理的・論理的でないか、ということを指摘したものだ。
しょっぱなからジョーク満載で、ちょっと鼻につくが慣れれば楽しい。

こういう研究は最近経済界でも注目されており、投資の動きを読んだりするのに活用されている。そのせいか、このダニエル・ギルバート先生は大和證券のＣＭにも出ている。
なかなかの好演。

タイトルに騙されてはいけない。「はじめに」にもあるように本書のテーマは人間の脳の「先見の力と限界」だ。脳が未来を予想するとき、いかに一面しか見ていないか気づかされる。我々の幸せ度もそれに左右されてしまうのだ。また、本書には心理学の色々な実験成果が挙げられていて、そちらに関心のある人にも絶対お奨め。第６部にくると、そうそうと頷きながら読み進めること間違いなし。著者の推奨する「代理体験」は、就職活動におけるＯＢ・ＯＧ訪問みたいなものなのかな。
