ブラウン本は本当に少なくなっています。本書も絶版で入手困難
でしたがようやく新装版で帰ってきた。本書を契機にブラウンの
作品がまた再刊されることを願っています。SF、ショートショート、
サスペンス…全部ブラウンから教えてもらいました。いろんな作品
を書いたよろず職人という感じです。どの作品も読みやすい、わかり
やすい。底が浅いのではなく、人間心理に通じていないとこういう
面白いものはなかなか書けないものです。読者を常に考えている職
人芸です。淡白な文章を読み終えた後の余韻がいい。本当にいい
書き手に出会ったという実感が残ります。ブラウンは初めてだし
本書は値が高い、と思われる方はまず「未来世界から来た男」（創
元SF文庫）を読まれるといいでしょう。

１９６２年１０月に異色作家短編集として刊行され、永らく絶版になっていたものの同・新装版第一回配本の2です（1はロアルド・ダール著のキス・キス）。全１２編が収録されていますが、どれも重い、深刻な内容ではなく、著者お得意のおバカＳＦあり、ブラックユーモアあり、予想も出来ないようなオチありと、人を喰ったようなストーリーをテンポ良く読ませてくれます。一話読むと、もう一話と、途中で止まりませんでした。訳者も変わっていないそうです。私は以前出版された方は未読なのですが、星新一さんの訳、いい感じです。解説は坂田靖子さんが書かれています。異色作家短編集シリーズは全２０巻刊行されるそうなので、全巻揃える予定の身としては、値段が若干高い気がします。フレデリック・ブラウン氏の作品を初めて読もうと思っている方にもオススメします。異色作家という括りには、あと誰が入っているんでしょうか？次回配本予定を見るのが楽しいです。

　著者について多くを語る必要はないでしょう。知っている人には説明は不要ですし、知らない人は……読んで損のない作家です、とひとことだけ（『スポンサーから一言』を真似ているわけではありませんが）。

　フレデリック・ブラウンも名作だけを書くわけではありません。これはちょっと、という出来のものも混じっています。でも、私は小さな声で言いたい。フレデリック・ブラウンを知らない人は人生の何％かを損している、と。一度だけ読んでわかった気になっている人も人生の何％かを損している、と。読みましょう。しばらく経ったら再読しましょう。その時その時でとっても良い味がしますよ。
