5.0 out of 5 stars ミステリー・ファンでなくても楽しめる小説, 2003/3/25
この小説は，複数の側面から評価できると思いました。
まず，ミステリーとしては，構成が完璧だと思いました。この小説は，読者に想像させながら一気に読み進ませるだけのスリル感があり，殺人鬼の真犯人や森の怪人ゴートマンの正体が意外であったことから，読後の充実感を与えてくれました。

次に，１１歳の少年である主人公の心理描写が，実に見事でした。少年が社会の様々なことを理解し始める様子や，絶対的な存在であった父親が自信を喪失して泣くところを目撃したときの描写は，読みごたえがあります。

また，黒人差別問題を考えさせられる場面が，いくつもありました。日本人にとっては過去の歴史であると思われがちですが，決して遠い過去のことではないと再認識させられます。
ミステリー以外の面でも楽しめ，途中決して退屈することのない長編だと思います。
もちろん，翻訳もすばらしいのだと思います。

アメリカ南部のホラ話、怪談の要素をうまくサスペンス小説に取り込んで、なかなか読ませる。少年が主人公の冒険小説でもあるし、黒人差別を描く視点は社会派だ。テキサスの「ボトムズ」という湿地帯のことをよく知らない日本人が読んでもそこそこ面白い。自然や風俗の描写が非常に魅力的だからだ。ヒット。きれいな流し打ちじゃなく、泥臭く引っ張ってレフト前ヒット。

物語として、とても面白い作品だ。
物語は、死の床についた老人の回想で幕をあける。
彼の少年時代。伝説や悪魔の存在に子どもながらの興味と恐怖を覚えていた。そこにシリアルキラーが出現する。
ミステリーにのせて語られる少年の成長物語は、ノスタルジックで、心にしみとおる。
スティーブン･キングのファンの方は、絶対に気に入るはず。
