なぜこの本を手に取ったのかはわからないけれど、タイトルにひきつけられたというのもあります。ラブストーリーを期待して読みはじめたら、ちょっとありそうでない風変わりなラブストーリーだと気づきます。登場人物の一人一人がユニークで変ってる！（現実離れした人物が少し問題点かとも思うけれど。）11の短い話がまとまって一冊になっていて、登場人物はPreemptionというニューヨークの古いアパートの住人たちと彼らに関わる人々。一つの話が盛り上がって、そして突然終わるというパターンで、読者に何とも言い難い余韻を残します。それは、それぞれの話がつながってないように思えて、どこかで絡み合っていて、その微妙なところもおもしろいのかもしれない。特に"Jacob's Bath"の夫婦の儀式というか、献身的姿の映し出し方がよかったです。笑いがあり、悲しみもあり、信じられないところも、ちょっと感動するところもあり、デビュー作なので今後に期待したい。

最初の数編を読んだだけでは小洒落たニューヨーク人間絵巻かな、と思ったが、表題作の「マンハッタンでキス」（そんな軽い内容ではなくもっとドロドロの変態）あたりから話が一つにまとまってきて面白くなる。不思議な味の本だった。作家があちこちに書き散らした短篇を寄せ集めた短編集ではなく、全体が一つの世界観をもっていて、作品の配列などに意をこらしてあるところが気に入った。ざっくばらんに言うと愛がテーマで、不条理な世界の中で愛を信じようとするポジティヴさがあり、読後感はさわやか。
