アリス・ホフマンの一連の作品は、個人の内面を乾いた描写で表現する一方、ロマンチック。
本作もまさにその流れにある。
主人公はノラと息子のビリー。
保守的な街でノラは目立つ。
女からは嫌われ、男から熱い視線を浴びる。
ビリーは奔放な母親が疎ましい。
その関係が本作の旋律なって、背景を流れている。

物語が進展するにつれ、
平和な家庭であっても、
一皮向けばいくらでも破綻が口をあけていることが明らかになってくる。
徐々に街の一見幸せな家庭の荒廃があらわになっていく。
中盤から、いくつのもエピソードが同時並行で進む。
家出して自由と美貌を得た妻のエピソード、事故死する女子高生と不良少年のエピソードが好きです。
愛情とは、家庭とは、人生とは・・・。
それらを考えさせられる一冊です。

20台、30台の女性にぜひ、読んでもらいたいですね。
