SFの名作『アルジャーノンに花束を』が生み出されるまでを描いた、著者ダニエル・キイスの自伝。主人公チャーリー・ゴードンの名前の由来、小説内のエピソードの背景となった氏の様々な仕事歴、などを伺い知ることが出来る。また、エージェントや編集者との原稿のやりとり、といった米国出版界の様子も面白い。（キイスは編集者からアルジャーノンをハッピーエンドにすることを要求されていた！）　『アルジャーノン‥』に感動した人なら必読。

「アルジャーノンに花束を」を読んだことがある人であれば読んで欲しい本です。いかに、著者が心を捧げて「アルジャーノンに花束を」を書いたかがつづってあります。でもだからといって、くさい自伝ではなくて。著者が過ごした人生の中でも見出すチャーリイゴードンは著者本人も「自分のようだ」といっています。誰しもが自分を「チャーリイのようだ」と思う理由も書いてあって・・・勇気付けられる本だと思いました。

行き場のない感動を感じました。私たちはある意味、みなチャーリー・ゴードンではないでしょうか？
