ホークの人生の恩人が現れ，その息子の危機を救う仕事と，スーザンの友人がストーカーに付け回されている問題を調査する仕事を同時並行にこなすスペンサー．ホークの少年期が回想されるのはファンにとっては新しく嬉しい発見．また，白人が黒人を差別するという単純な問題に留まらず，現在のアメリカの複雑な人種問題をうまく組み込んでいるのが素晴らしい．これで物語が何重にも厚みのあるものになっている．英文学教授の経験もあるパーカーが大学の終身雇用権をテーマの一部に組み入れたのも面白いし，スーザンがスペンサーに教わった通りに人を殴り倒すラストにも驚きと笑いが含まれている．

洋書を手にとった方は何人かいるかと思う。特にこのスペンサーシリーズ。
しかし、日本のミステリーは大抵巻頭に登場人物の肩書きリストがついているけれど
ペーパーバッグにはない。ので、ただでさえ外人の名前って覚えづらいのに、こいつが
誰だったのか読んでいるうちにわからなくなってくる。

という事情のため単語力や文章読解力的にはさほどこの作品は難しくないかもしれないが
ストーリー紹介にもあるようにいくつかの事件が平行して描かれているのでどれがどの
事件で、誰が誰だか全くわからなくなって作品を楽しむことができない…

村上さんの本で紹介されていた洋書の多読学習は、学習というより趣味として英語に
触れられてとても参考になりこの本は3冊目だが、今までで一番内容が頭に入ってこない。

英語の勉強の為、原作を読みました。
アメリカ社会の話と思って読んでいても
現代日本にも置き換えて読めそうな内容でビックリしました。
完璧に全部は理解出来ませんでしたが、
文章が読みやすく、大変勉強になりました。
また時間をおいて再度読み返したくなりました。
