　真っ赤なカバーに「よその子」と白くかかれた文字に惹かれ、読みはじめました。トリィ・へイデンさんの本を読んだことは、この本が初めてです。
　
　親にも見放され、トリィのところにやってきた子供たちは、私から見ると「変わった子供たち」でした。でも、読んでいくうちに、子供たちだって私と同じように怒ったり悲しんだりしてるのだと考えました。　
　
　私はこの本を読んでいて、もどかしくなる時があります。子供たちの気持ちを分かろうとしない大人たちがでてくるところです。他の子供と比べたり、子供の気持ちを分かってやれない大人たちに腹が立ちました。
　
　私がもしそこにいたなら、子供たちと一緒にいて、分かり合える事ができるか・・・分かりません。それは、私が子供たちを恐れているからです。でも、トリィさんのように子供たちに接する事ができるような、そんな大人になりたいです。
　
　この本には、大切な事、忘れてはいけない事がたくさん書いてあります。読んでいくうちに、泣いてしまうような場面もあります。でも、この本から色々な事を学ぶ事ができたのは確かです。

登場する子供たちそれぞれが全く違う大きな問題を抱えている。やり場の無い思いをぶつけることのできる唯一の存在であるトリイ。失敗を重ねながらも一人一人の気持ちを着実につかむところはさすが、トリイといったところだか、そんなトリイも４人の子供たちが随所に見せるやさしさや強さに助けられている。大人が子供から教わることがとても多いと思い知らされる一冊。連続する教室内外でのハプニングの描写も非常にリアルで映画を観ているよう。
