　この本は、小説家である清水義範さんが、弟の経営する学習塾で小学生に作文の書き方を教え始まったことをきっかけに書かれたものです。塾生の作文を載せ、清水先生がそれに対して指導していくさまがよく伝わってきて、塾生の作文が上達するさまが面白く書かれています。現在の塾に見られる機械的な教え方ではなく、人対人の人間的なふれあいが実によく伝わって、是非塾や学校の先生、または子供を持つ親に読んでいただきたい。文章を書く人にも参考になる一冊です。

文章を書く技術の本だと思って読み始めたのだが、全然違っていた。いや、文章を書く上で役に立たないわけでは無いだろうが、技術解説をする事を主眼において書かれた本ではないという意味だ。小学生の作文の成長記録といった感じの本である。その意味では、当初の見込みとは全く違った本を読んだ事になる。

私が小学生のころを思い起こしてみると、「今日○○があった。××さんがいた。面白かった。」という感じの作文しか書けなかったような記憶がある。それを考えれば作文教室の生徒達の書く文章の質の高さには驚かされる。中には、本当に小学生が書いているのだろうかと疑いたくなるようなものまであった。特に1年間の授業が終わるころの作品はかなりの出来である。私も含めて平均的なレベルの大人では到底書けないくらいである。「人間って成長するんだな」と実感させられ興味深かった。

教育の原点は誉めることであるということを再認識させてくれる本である。
大人でも子供でも誉められることによって成長していくんだなあ。
わが子はなんて下手な作文・日記しか書けないんだという小学生をお持ちの方にお薦めである。なんて間違った指導をしていたんだろうと思うことまちがいなし。
