~NHK教育テレビでも放映された「神話の力」の書籍版です。当時僕は大学生でした。アメリカインディアンの伝承物語のストーリーや、スターウォーズの引用などを興味を持って見ることができました。この本ではもっと詳しく扱っています。ビルモイヤースは上手に質問してはジョーゼフキャンベルからいろいろ示唆に富んだ発言を引き出しています。たとえば、神話を~~現代に伝えるのは芸術家であるが、では、芸術家でもないその他大勢の普通の人間にできることは？　と質問されてキャンベル先生は、しかるべき人が書いたまともな本をひたすら読むことだと答えています。こういう具体的な助言はテレビでは印象に残っていません。本ならではです。神話学の教科書ではありませんが神話に興味を持った人が読めばきっと得るものが~~多いでしょう。~

題名だけみると、神話の話のように見える。確かに神話の話がなされているが、そこから広がる世界がすばらしい。ジョーゼフ・キャンベルの深く広い知識から広がる世界を堪能できる。
インタビューアーであるビル・モイヤーズもきちんとキャンベルの著作を読んでインタビューに臨んでいるだけでなく、キャンベルの力を引き出している。
神話学、宗教学の話にとどまらない。結婚などを含めた、日常性生活にも言及している。

「人々はよく生きることの意味を探していると言いますが、人間が本当に探求しているのは＜いま生きているという経験＞です。」この本は、神話学の世界的な権威であるジョーゼフ・キャンベルが、世界各地の詩人や賢者の言葉を使い、私たちに人生は素晴らしいことだということを伝えてくれる。

古代の神話が失われつつある現代において、今求められている神話がどういうものか、そしてその中で生きる私たちはどのように生きるべきかを導いてくれる本である。宗教学や神話学に興味のない人であっても、必ず彼の言葉には自分と共通する物語が探せるはずである。
