一応、ハードボイルド形式（三人称だが）になってはいるが、本格っぽさも感じられる。主人公自らが事件の渦中に飛び込むあたりは、冒険小説とも言えるか。作者自身が、「ウェズリー・スナイプスを意識した」という主人公の人間像はよく伝わるのだが、うぅん。予定調和的な流れだよなぁ、という気がする。僕が読んだ最初のオベール作品なので、作家自身の評価までは出来ないが（今、「ジャクソンヴィルの闇」を読んでいる最中）、これが最高傑作ということはないだろうな。「ハードボイルドなら何でも」と言う人は、途中で投げ出したりはしないと思うけどね。
