4.0 out of 5 stars 子供の時に感じた目に見えない恐怖, 2001/5/27
フランス映画の終わりのシーンのように　必ずしもスカッとできるストーリーではないだけに　味わい深い読み物でした。誰かから見られているのに、誰から見つめられているのか分からない。そして読んだ後しばらくしたら、一体誰が犯人だったのかもう一度読み直す必要を感じる。複雑で不思議な感覚が残る。アメリカの最近の探偵小説のように妙に庶民的な感じではなくて、なんだか少し質の高いテレビ映画（それも連続ドラマ）をアンティークのテレビで見ているような雰囲気もあります。故意に話の筋には触れませんでしたがハヤカワミステリフリークの私も久しぶりに満足しました。デビュー作もすごく良かったです。

連続猟奇殺人犯と、偶然にその手記を見つけてしまった家政婦のモノローグが交互につづられてものがたりが展開する。四人のうち誰が犯人なのか、犯人に狙われた家政婦はどうなる・・・

最後まで、警察に助けを求められなかったり、逃げ出せなかったりの、”もっともらしい”家政婦の理由は、まあ、良いとして、このフランスミステリっぽい、ユーモアの表現は苦手。気になって集中できなかった。乳児が、あっさりと被害者になってしまうのも、ちょっと抵抗がある。作品としては、よくできていると思うけど・・・

トリッキーなアイデアで読者を驚かせてくれる快作。殺人狂の兄弟とメイドの各々の日記で物語が進行するという形式は折原一氏が試みそうなタイプだが、本作ではうまく機能していると思う。私はクィーンの小品でこれと似たアイデアのものを読んでいたので途中で予想が付いたが、予備知識無しでは作者の思惑通り騙されていたろう。

アイデアが明らかになってから振り返って見ると、トリックを活かすために細部まで神経を行き届かせた描写、精緻な構成が光る。心地良く騙されたい人にお勧めの傑作。

手法も変わっているし、一気に読みたくなる面白さだ。
