『バートン版千夜一夜物語』で有名な、リチャード・バートンの稀覯本と彼の記録に残されていない探検記をめぐるミステリ。
バートンの稀覯本を落札して一躍有名になった、古本屋のクリフのもとを、その本はうちの書庫から盗まれたものだと主張する老婦人が訪ねてきます。なんでも、彼女の祖父はバートンと友達で、家にはバートンからのサイン入り献本（要するに稀覯本の山！）で埋め尽くされた一大書庫があったのですが、８０年前、祖父の死をきっかけに騙し取られたというのです。その中には、バートンがアメリカを訪れた際の日誌も含まれていて、それがあれば唯一バートンの伝記でも不明な部分が明かされ、ひょっとしたら南北戦争の非常に重要な場面にバートンが関わっていたことがわかるかもしれないのです。死に際の老婆に頼まれては、「いいひと」クリフは断れません。消えた大量の蔵書と誰も知らないバートンの秘密という誘惑もあり、クリフは老婦人に代わって蔵書探しをすることになります。ところが、老婦人を助けていた人のいい夫婦のうちの妻のほうが、強盗殺人にあってしまいます。その後もクリフの周囲で次々に不審な出来事が。元刑事としての意識を触発されたクリフは、蔵書探索と共に、殺人犯捜しにも乗り出すのでした。
相変わらず古書蘊蓄も満載で、各出版社の初版本の見分け方やら、古書売買で億万長者になる方法やらが挿入されてます。「人の家に行くと本棚で人格を判断する」なんて話が出てきて、かなりシンパシーです。今回は美人弁護士が出てきてクリフをサポートするのですが、この二人の会話がもう「おまえはスペンサーか?!」ってカンジにキザで笑えるのも見所。もちろん、バートンの歴史ミステリ的部分もとっても読み応えがあって、ダニングはストーリーテラーだなあと改めて感心します。

待ちに待った古書店主クリフ・ジェーンウェイの登場です。
今回は、古書に絡んだ歴史ミステリ＆現在の殺人犯捜索が主軸となります。
シリーズ前回の「幻の特装本」で得た報酬により、リチャード・バートンの稀覯本を手に入れたクリフですが、入手した本はバートン本人から「チャールズ・ウォレンに」との直筆の献辞があり、ここからクリフは１００年以上前にアメリカへやってきたバートンの約３ヶ月に及ぶ「空白の時期」解明に巻き込まれます。特に、物語中盤の「バートンとチャーリー」は、瑞々しい文体で、当時の二人の様子が語られ、ジョン･ダニングの筆致のすばらしさを堪能できます。Ｒ・バートンを知らない人でも問題なく楽しめる内容です。
「死の蔵書」は荒削りなタフ・ガイ刑事でしたが、「幻の特装本」を経て、どんどんダニングが記述力が洗練されてきたのがわかります。シリーズ四作目の「The Sign of the Book」も早く和訳されないかな、と待ち遠しくなりました。

シリーズ第３弾にも関わらず、ダニングを初めて読んだのは何故かこの本でした。あんまり面白かったので、シリーズ１弾、２弾、その他のダニングの文庫も勢いで一気に読み漁ってしまいました。（読むものが無くて困った時用に一冊だけ読まずにとってあります。）

まず設定が異色です。元刑事で古本好きなんて、そんな人いるんだ、という意外性。リチャード・バートンという多少著名な歴史上の人物、そしてあくまでも本がらみ。シリーズ前２作とも、他の作品とも多少趣が違いますが、ミステリ好き、本好きの人は絶対楽しめる作品です。
