本書を読み終えた時久しぶりに良い本を読んだと満足しました。本書には本好きの心をうずかせる驚くべき知識が詰まっています。いわゆる稀覯本といわれるマニア泣かせの本が扱われているのですが、本書に出てくるそれらの稀覯本の興味深いことといったらありません。死ぬまでに一度はこの目で見てみたい本ばかりです。主人公は本好きの警官。まずこのキャラクターが魅力的です。ハードボイルドの定番ですが、口は達者で頭の回転がはやいときてる。まったく、このクリフの生き方には共感をおぼえます。だってそうでしょ、本好きというだけで充分魅力的ですからね。

　これはいってもルール違反じゃないと思いますが、クリフは警官を辞めて本屋をはじめます。そして事件に巻き込まれていきます。本書はミステリとしても申し分ありません。ラストでは、誰もが驚くことでしょう。

　本書には「幻の特装本」という続編がありまして、世評では１作目よりは見劣りするなどといわれてますが、なんのなんのこちらもロス・マク風味の悲劇の様相を呈した好編でした。それに、この本では本の薀蓄というより本を製作する過程での薀蓄がてんこ盛りで、かなり勉強になります。二冊合わせてどっぷりと本の世界を楽しんで下さい。本好きにはたまりませんよ。

弱々しい古本屋の店主がのっぴきならぬ事態に追い込まれ、知力の限りを尽くして復讐する…わけではなく。
古本業界が舞台な以外は、普通のタフ型中年ハードボイルド。
またしても鬱陶しい恋愛模様が。

　ストーリーはまとまりがあって、読みやすかった。また次々と古書名と現在の価値が出てくるので、飽きずに読めた。欠点が１つだけあるとすれば、勘が良い人なら犯人がストーリーの半ばで分かるかもしれないことではないだろうか？
