創元推理文庫では『エンド・ハウスの怪事件』として翻訳されている作品です（間違えて両方買わないように！）。クリスティにしては地味な作品で、トリックは決して大仕掛けなものではありません。しかし、じつはかなり掟破りのことをやっています。何をやっているかを書いてしまうと興をそぐので書きませんが、読んでみると「なるほど、クリスティはこれをやりたかったのだな」とわかると思います。

もうひとつ面白いのは、登場人物たち（＝容疑者たち）がみんな怪しい言動をしていることです。もちろん、殺人事件に直接関係あるのはごく一部の人なのですが、それでは他の人達はなぜそんな行動を取るのかということにポワロが頭を悩ませます。それらの謎の中の最後のひとつが明らかにされるところでこの物語は終わるのですが、その謎は事件に直接の関係はありません。それによって陰湿な事件にもかかわらず、読後感を微笑ましいものにすることに成功しています。

命を狙われた美女ニックを守ろうと立ち上がった勇敢な騎士のようなポアロ！でもそこはクリスティ、どんどん謎が深まって…最後にやっぱりポアロの活躍で謎が解かれて爽快！

「邪悪の家」の原題は、「ＰＥＲＩＬ　ＡＴ　ＥＮＤ　ＨＯＵＳＥ」であり、他社の文庫本、テレビ版「名探偵ポワロ」、ＮＨＫアニメ「アガサ・クリスティーの名探偵ポワロとマープル」では、全て「エンド・ハウス（の）怪事件」の邦題で発表されている作品である。余談だが、アガサには、原題そのままの「ねじれた家」という作品もあり、私などは、未だに、両者を混同してしまうのだ。こうした紛らわしい邦題の付け方は、何とかならないものだろうか。

さて、物語の方だが、イギリス南部海岸の観光地のホテルで夏の休暇を過ごすポアロは、エンド・ハウスの若く美しい女主人ニックと知り合う。ニックは、三日間に三度も命を狙われ、今また、ポアロの目の前で、狙撃されたのだ。ポアロは、五回目を警戒して、エンド・ハウスに乗り込むのだったが、ダンス・パーティの夜、遂に、悲劇が起きる。

終盤に、事件の真相を解明したポアロが、未知の犯人をあぶり出すため、関係者が一堂に会する中で、エンド・ハウスで演出・上演してみせるお芝居のシナリオは、どんでん返しの終幕付きで、見事の一語、アガサの卓越したストーリー・テラー振りの面目躍如といったところだ。

ちなみに、この作品が出版された頃は、アガサは、マックスとの二度目の結婚の直後で、日常生活を存分に楽しむとともに、フルスピードで相当数の作品を一気に書き上げていた時期であり、アガサはこの当時の作品の記憶があまりなく、この作品についても、「わたしの小説の中ではまるで印象が残っていないし、書いた記憶さえ思い出せない」と、さんざんな言い様なのだが、「ようやく自分の書くものに自信が持てるようになってきた」と言っている時期でもあり、初期の傑作の一つであることは確かだろう。
