Dover Mystery ClassicsのThe mysterious affair at styles を買おうとしている人へ!!要注意です。
ページ数を見るとわかりますが(１６０ページ)これは原作そのままではありません!子供向けのサイドリーダーみたいなやつです。
クリスティーの原作を読みたいと思っている人は買ってはいけません。
もちろん、簡単なのから入門しようという人には最適だと思いますが･･･。こういうことは、紹介文でしっかりといってほしいと思いますよねー。まあこれだけ本があればそこまでみていられないのかもしれませんが。かく言う私も届いてからガーンとショックを受けた一人･･･)

アガサ・クリスティーに興味があって手に取った本作。
しかし翻訳された文が馴染まず、途中で投げてしまいました。

同じ人物を違う呼び方で何度も呼ぶ人々、不自然に感じるほど前置きが長すぎる文、手書きの英語で書かれたメモ等々、無理やり原文通りに訳したという印象があります。

興味だけで手に取るには敷居が高すぎました。
翻訳された作品を読むのは初めてではなかったのですが、とても読みにくかったです。

ここから一連のアガサ作品が始まった。1920年の記念碑ですね。作品は初作品としては面白いと思う。ただその後の、「アクロイド殺し」「そして誰もいなくなった」「5匹の子豚」「葬儀を終えて」「ゼロ時間へ」「殺人は容易だ」に比べれば、作品的には落ちる。ハラハラ感や展開の素晴らしさを感じたいなら、そういった作品をこの作品より薦める。ここから始まったという意味で、ポアロ最後の「カーテン」同様に、外せない作品だと思うが「ポアロ登場」と同様に読まなくても全然問題はないと思う。
