イシグロ,カズオ
1954年11月8日長崎生まれ。1960年、5歳のとき、家族と共に渡英。以降、日本とイギリスのふたつの文化を背景にして育つ。ケント大学で英文学を、イースト・アングリア大学大学院で創作を学ぶ。1982年の長篇デビュー作『遠い山なみの光』で王立文学協会賞を、1986年に発表した『浮世の画家』でウィットブレッド賞を受賞。1989年には長篇第3作の『日の名残り』でブッカー賞を受賞した。1995年の第4作『充たされざる者』、2000年の第5作『わたしたちが孤児だったころ』の後、5年ぶりに発表した最新長篇『わたしを離さないで』は世界的ベストセラーとなっている

カズオ・イシグロの初心者として、３冊目のこれを読了し、今その面白さと美しさに“圧倒”されている。
著名なピアニスト、ライダーの行く手に、人の心そのものと、人の縺れた関わりの間にある迷路が次々にたち現れる。出口を失って彷徨い、また道を発見したかと思うと、さらに新たな迷路に迷い込む。
物語はcaricature仕立てで、曲りくねった心象の連鎖が延々と執拗に辿られるにもかかわらず、その心象が投影される不思議な建築や空間の描写の美しさには意表を衝かれる。
現代音楽のマレリー、カザン、ヤマナカなど架空の作曲家がたびたび登場するが、カリカチュアライズされているにも関らず、不思議にそのゴシック的空間の中から、“垂直線”の透明かつ不協和な音がリアルに聴こえてくるから不思議だ。
・・・いつかこの続編をぜひとも読んでみたい。深い心の迷宮と東欧風の風景が交錯するシックな闇と、精緻に彫りこまれた建築空間の内部に響き渡る、光のようなカザンのカデンツアを聴いてみたい。

主人公がある町にやってきて起こる出来事。
一見何の変哲も無いような小説に思えるが、読んでみるとこれがどうして・・・。
これでもかこれでもかと主人公の前に立ちはだかる不条理な出来事。
救われる結末なのか？いったい事態は好転するのか！？と思い始め、ページをめくるのがもどかしい。
「いったいどうなるんだ！」と叫び出したくなりながら、それでも本を投げ出さずに読んだ。
ハラハラする長い小説だが、私が読み終えた後発したのは「充たされなかった・・・」という言葉であった。
タイトルは小説を読んだ人も含まれるのか？
私自身も「充たされざる者」？と思い、つい笑ってしまった。
読後の「充たされない度」は満点である。挑戦するつもりで読むのがおすすめ。
パラドックスのようであるが、「読んだ！」という充実感とともに、カズオ・イシグロの小説に益々興味が湧いたのであった。

読み進めているとドップリと作品世界に巻き込まれ、日常的な意識に霞がかかってくるような「危険な」作品だ。これこそ小説であり、大部の文庫本の半分も読んでくれば、それは心地よくなる。とは言え、作品世界は不条理の連続。しかも、主人公のピアニストは次々と現れてくる不条理をその都度肯定していく。また、主人公に関わる登場人物たちは、主人公の過去に関わったことのある人物たちであると、主人公は「思い出す」ようになる。それは欺かれているのか、幻想世界の錯覚なのか・・・・。過去にあらざる記憶。それは本来、矛盾なのだが、主人公は彼の周りに立ち現れてくる人びとによって、様々な期待をかけられることで、過去を想起し、彼らとの過去があったかもしれないという想念に落ち着き、彼らのために生きようとするのだ。
そう、この不可思議な世界、これこそ小説にしかなし得ない世界であり、しかもこれこそリアルな作品ともいうこともできるだろう。
松浦寿輝の『半島』にも、本作と似たようなテイストがあるが、主人公が右往左往しながら、それでも事態を肯定的に受け止めてしまうという究極の不条理（これこそ現代社会ではないか）の描写において、イシグロよりはロマンチックに過ぎる。つまり不徹底なのだ。
