最初に買ったのはもう２０年以上前（１８歳の頃)の単行本でした。野坂昭如が翻訳しているのを見て、「きっとへんてこりんな小説なんだろう」と期待しました。読んでみるともちろんへんてこりんだったのですが、洒脱な言葉遣いとむき出しの感受性に満ちていて、素敵な小説だなぁと思いました。特に、マリリン･モンローを描いた「美しい子供」は秀逸で、今思えばカポーティだからこそ、肉感から切り離されたマリリンを（つまり男でも女でもない視線で）あんなにも可愛らしく書けたのだろうと感じます。

初めてカポーティを読んだのは、生意気盛りのローティーンのとき。
『遠い声　遠い部屋』。本棚を見たら、黄ばんだ文庫本がありました。
『カメレオンのための音楽』は、本読みの大先輩が「再読したらやはりよかった」というのと、『冷血』の映画は観たけど、本は途中読みだったので、再トライの意味で買ってみました。
「初めて読んですごくよかった」です。
やはり秀逸なのは、マリリン・モンローとのスケッチ。
これを読むためだけにでも、買う価値はあるのではないでしょうか。（文庫だし）
いろんなＴＣ（トルーマン・カポーティ）がいて、どれもＴＣ。
何かのあとがき（？）に、「彼にとっては生きることすべてが病因だった」（というようなこと）が書いてありましたが、さもありなん。
でも、好きにならずにいられない人です。（隣にいたら、また、別かもしれませんが）
野坂さんの訳も素敵でした。

カポーティを読むのは初めてでしたが、ティファニーで朝食をからうけるイメージとは少し違う雰囲気の小説でした。訳の仕方も影響しているでしょうが、淡々としていて無駄がなく、筆者はあくまでも第３者として事件を客観的に。という姿勢が伝わってくる反面、インタビューをフィクションだと感じさせるほどの物語性も持っています。ニューヨークヤロサンジェルスを舞台とし、マリリン・モンローも登場人物となる華やかさとは裏腹に、どこか寂しさと暗さの漂う作品群。何年か後読み返せば、きっとまた違う印象を受けれる一作だと思います。
