5.0 out of 5 stars 真実の追究とビリーへの愛に溢れた作品, 2005/3/25
　もし自分がビリーだったら・・。正気ではいられないだろう。しかしこれは真実の記録であり、24人という多重人格を持つビリーミリガンと、彼の人格をひとつにする為に尽力する医者達が中心となったノンフィクションである。殺人、レイプ・・。彼が（彼の中の人格が）犯した様々な犯罪の影には、幼い頃父から受けた幼児虐待があった。
　作者のダニエル・キイスは、ただノンフィクションを描いたのではない。彼は人間の心を紐解く重要な役割を果たし、読者の心の奥に訴えかける作品を作り上げた。まったく同じ事実でも、彼が描いたようにこのストーリーを書ける者はいないだろう。国を超えて読まれ、愛されるのには理由がある。是非読んで頂きたい。

多重人格という症状が身近でないからなのかどうしてもピンとこないところもある。だけど、多重人格者の内的世界はこういうことになっているというのがよくわかる本だった。
それにしても多重人格者ビリーの世界は驚くべき世界だ。にわかに信じることが出来ない。最初にビリーを診察した精神科医や弁護士たちと同じように。怒りを感じたときはレイゲンという人格が現れビリーを守る。肉体的痛みは小さなデイビッドが引き受け、相手と話のやりとりをするときアレンが、そしてそれらの人格をアーサーという人格が統制している。とても論理的思考のもとに。
それらの人格はビリーという人間を守るために、自身がつくり出したものにすぎない。人間の想像力は恐るべきものだ。その想像力には胸を打たれる。生きるために働く想像力。
作家はそんなビリーの世界を真摯に受け止めようとしているし、冷静に状況を判断しようとしている。良質なドキュメントの一冊である。

連続レイプ犯を逮捕するために、厳重な警戒体制が敷かれた様子の描写から物語は始まります。緊迫感のある導入部分で、一気に物語へ引き込まれ、容疑者の逮捕→取調べへと進み、その過程で次第に明らかになる主人公ビリーの24の人格達。

素晴らしいサスペンス小説であると同時に、多重人格と言う病を世に知らしめるに貢献した小説であると言えます。
キイスのこの作品が発表されるより前は、多重人格という病は、あまり世間に認知されていなかったように思います（少なくても日本では）。その意味からも本書の存在意義は大きいです。

キイスのこの作品以降、日本でも多重人格を扱った作品（小説とかドラマとか）が増えましたが、多重人格を物語を面白くするための手段として扱っている作品が多く、この病の本当の問題をちゃんと見据えていないことに深い憂慮を憶えます。
