警察官や職業探偵を主人公に据えた推理小説に比べると、素人が事件に巻き込まれるというタイプの推理小説にはどうしても「一般民間人がそんなにしょっちゅう殺人事件に巻き込まれるわけないじゃん」という印象を抱かせてしまうという難点があります。今作はそんな欠点を逆手にとってギャグにしてしまっているところに面白さがあります。

3度にわたって絞殺死体の第一発見者となったヘイスティングスは当然のように警察から疑われることになります（その為にわざわざ今回登場する警官は彼と仲の良いマコーリフ部長刑事ではなく、別の刑事にしてある）。詳しくは敢えて書きませんが、その過程で警察が持ち出す珍説は大いに笑えます。

かなり抜けてる私立探偵スタンリー。今回は、行く先行く先で、死体からの相談以来を受けてしまう？いったい誰が、彼の仕事の邪魔をしてるんだろう。足りない頭をフル回転して、自分の無実を立証しようと立ち回れば立ち回るほど深みにはまる面白さ。
