個人的にはハメットの最高傑作だと思います。

甘っちょろい描写は徹底して排除。
冷徹な信念にもとづいたスペードの行動で、
この醜い争奪戦の全貌がジワリジワリと明かされてゆきます。
しかも全てのキャラクターが、皆それぞれの立場で何とも魅力的なのです。
様々な思惑やウソ、罠、疑心暗鬼が渦巻くギスギスした相関関係。
前編にわたって　さり気なく、しかし念入りに張り巡らされた緊張感。
クールでドライで、しかも計算され尽くしたハメットの技法に感動です。

「五千ドルといえば大金だ」
「きみに、こけにされるのはごめんだ」

痺れます。

ダシール・ハメットの傑作．黄金の鷹像めぐる緊張感のある争奪戦で，登場人物の思惑，嘘，駆け引きが行き交い，徐々に全体像が見えてくる展開．癖のあるユニークな登場人物の立ち回りとその描写がまたすばらしい．ハードボイルド作品の金字塔．

私立探偵をやっているスペードの事務所に女がやってきてある男の尾行を依頼します。スペードの相棒がその仕事を引き受けますが射殺死体で発見され、直後に尾行対象だった男も撃たれるというお話です。

「RED HARVEST」では一人称記述でしたが、今回は三人称で記述されておりスペードや登場人物の内面は行動を通して窺うことしかできなくなります。ドライな書き方といいハードボイルドの完成品として申し分ないものでしょう。
安易に人生観や感情を吐露することなく行動で語りかけてくる姿は強く印象に残ります。

ハメットは作品を発表した時期が限定されていて、しかも日本では他の作品がなかなか手に入らない作家ですが、それでもサム・スペードという名前を人々の心に刻み込んだそのエネルギーには驚きを禁じ得ません。
