パーカー随一の傑作。傑作過ぎてほとんど冷静でいられない。ハードボイルドといったジャンヌを超えて、「大人になること」を見事に描ききっている。「大人になること」は当然の痛みを伴う。それは、親との別れでもあり現実を見つめることであり、自分というものを確認する作業である。パーカーは、そのことをひとりの少年の物語で語った。誰もが経験するプロセス(そう、誰もが懐かしいものを感じるだろう)を、スペンサーは言語化して僕らの前に提示していく。僕らは気づく、あらためて僕らの辿ったことはこういうことだったのか、と。

何度か読み返したが、スペンサーの警句が「おとな」の心に今でも響く。年を取って読み返すと、普遍的なスペンサー(「おとな」)の、少年への哀れみと、ある種の憧れのよう!なものが底辺にあることに気づく。また、それを押さえて踏みとどまるおとなのスタイルに共感を強く覚える。ここにある、乾いたハードボイルドなスタイルは生き方の問題である。

あのとき、僕らの季節は初秋だったのだ。冬が近づいていた。

分類としてはネオ・ハードボイルド探偵小説のスペンサーシリーズ中の一冊であるが、この本だけ読んでも問題はありません。この本は私のお気に入りの一冊で、いままでこの本をいろんな人たちに進めてきましたが、皆に好評です。この小説は探偵小説の分類ではありますが、その様には読めない人も多いはず。子供から青年への成長を大人の視点で綴ったスペンサーシリーズの傑作。

山あり谷ありといった話ではないですが心に残る一冊．物語の筋云々よりも，子供から大人になる過程を客観的にシミュレートして，明文化してくれるような（変わった？）ハードボイルドもの．スペンサーは実に淡々と語り，大人になろうとしているポールにさまざまなものを提示しますが，それに妙に懐かしさを感じます．スペンサーシリーズではこの後ポールが頻繁に登場するのでそれもお見逃しなく．
