この豪快さが気に入れば読書は快調だ。
第1作は保険会社に勤めていた著者サラ・パレツキーの経歴を生かした保険金詐欺事件である。物語の舞台となるシカゴの多層な人種の入り交じる複雑な事情、学生運動の残響など、1982年当時の世情が盛り込まれた骨太なつくりの小説である。一方で事件に絡んで展開されるヴィクの淡い恋愛の行方も見逃せない。きめ細かな人物描写で登場人物に厚みがあり、テンポある会話はヴィクの毒舌が小気味よく、作品世界にぐいぐい引き込まれる。ヴィクのひいきの野球チーム、シカゴカブスの勝敗が捜査の一進一退を告げ知らせるのもしゃれている。甘すぎず苦すぎず絶妙のさじ加減で男女を問わず楽しめる。
